It seems the market may have finally reached its peak.
There have been down times for flat panel TVs sales and even quarters where shipments decreased, but there has never been a yearly decrease in shipments. Even during the worst parts of the recession, flat panel TV shipments were up. 2012 may be the first year to take things in the other direction.
IHS iSuppli analysts are expecting to see a decrease in shipments over 2012, and suggest a 5% dip as a realistic expectation. That's around 2 million fewer TVs shipped than in 2011.
This isn't completely unexpected of course. From 2010 to 2011 the increase was just 1% - a plateau was clear. As it turns out, most flat panel sales are now to people replacing older flat panel sets.
