As Sony gears up to launch the Blu-Ray enabled PlayStation 3 game
console worldwide this fall, the company has announced it is dropping
the price on the popular PlayStation 2, reports Home Media Retailing.
The unit, which currently retails for $199, will be lowered to $129 starting
immediately."While we continue to innovate and design groundbreaking new products, we remain dedicated to our long-term vision for the PlayStation 2 platform," Kaz Hirai, pres and CEO of Sony America told HMR. "Now even more consumers, as well as casual gamers, can experience what the PlayStation 2 platform has to offer at a new value price."
The arrival Sony's much-buzzed about PSX3 console is expected to seriously impact the current high-def DVD format wars. Sales of the PSX2 currently account for 70 percent of the gaming market, and if the next-gen PlayStation 3 is a hit, it will see millions of Blu-Ray drives installed in millions of homes within months. Though there is no guarantee the PSX3 may not be delayed again from its planned November launch this year, Sony's price-dropping of the PSX2 is a solid sign that launch plans remain on track.
