As first reported over at HD Beat, an anonymous tipster was able to obtain the latest firmware version 1.9 beta for Toshiba's HD-A1 and HD-XA1 HD DVD players. Seems some of the cool new features will include the ability to decode Dolby TrueHD soundtracks, a feat which has so far eluded early adopters, amongst other upgrades.
Though Toshiba's HD-A1 series suffered from some clunky production bugs at launch, the company continues to earn points with consumers for its swift -- if numerous -- firmware upgrades. Unlike beleaguered Blu-ray rival Samsung, who has yet to issue a single update for its much-derided, problem-plagued BD-P1000 first-gen Blu-ray player.
Stay tuned for an official announcement from Toshiba when HD DVD firmware version 1.9 is finally ready for distribution to consumers.
