Next-Gen Hardware Sees Discounts Despite Strong Sales

Even with hardware sales remaining strong and supplies tight for both
Blu-ray and HD DVD, retailers have begun to slashing prices ahead of the holiday season.
Video Business reports that many top retailers have begun to discount Blu-ray and HD DVD players to remain competitive, even as hardware shortages suggest demand among early adopters remains brisk.
"It's getting more competitive, which I'm surprised because [players] are still hard to get," said Robert Zohn, president of N.Y.-based Value Electronics of the recent discounting.
Nevertheless, Zohn, along with other regional and major electronics outlets such as Amazon and Abt Electronics, have slashed prices on Blu-ray and HD DVD players by as much as twenty percent.
Crutchfield executive VP of merchandise Rick Souder expressed his frustration to VB, saying "I can't see why you would ever need to discount a new technology. We generally have more orders than we have inventory for. I know that many have said they are disappointed in sales. I haven't been."
