After years of legal wrangling, Warner Bros. has re-acquired the rights
to Ridley Scott's 1982 classic 'Blade Runner' and is planning a lavish 25th Anniversary
re-release on all home video formats including HD DVD and Blu-ray.
This September, Warner Home Video will re-issue the 1992 'Blade Runner: The Director's
Cut' on disc for a limited window of four months. Following in 2007, the studio
will then celebrate the film's 25th anniversary with a theatrical release of 'Blade
Runner: The Final Cut,' which it is billing as Scott's "definitive new version"
of the film. This will be followed by a lavish DVD box set, which will include
'The Final Cut,' the 1992 and original 1982 versions, plus extensive supplementary
material.
"This is clearly Ridley's signature film, and we are thrilled to have it
back," Warner senior vp and general manager of theatrical catalog Jeff Baker
told The Hollywood Reporter.
A Warner Home Video spokesperson also confirmed to High Def Digest that the studio's
release plans for 'Blade Runner' include issuing the film on the high-def DVD
formats it currently supports, including HD DVD and Blu-ray.
Warner is expected to announce more extensive details for both the re-issue of
'Blade Runner: The Director's Cut' as well as 'The Final Cut' in the weeks ahead.
