'Hitman' Developer IO Interactive Subjected to Massive Layoffs

All non-Hitman projects cancelled amid Square Enix directed changes.

Much has been made of Square Enix's missed sales targets, specifically with the new 'Tomb Raider' and with 'Hitman: Absolution,' and now the hammer has clearly fallen on Hitman developer, IO Interactive.

Past projects for IO in addition to the Hitman franchise have included 'Freedom Fighters,' 'Mini Ninjas,' and the two 'Kane & Lynch' titles.

From Square Enix VP of corporate communications Chris Glover, "The studio will focus resolutely on the future vision for the Hitman franchise and is in pre-production on a new AAA Hitman project. However we have taken the difficult decision to cancel other studio projects and initiatives at IO and reduce the workforce in this studio, which will impact almost half of the employees currently at IO, as we make internal adjustments to face the challenges of today's market."

The changes at the studio include promoting former production director Hannes Seifert to studio head, albeit of a much reduced studio.

Focusing on Square Enix's western efforts, it seems that the surprise success of 'Deus Ex: Human Revolution' has had a ripple effect for games like 'Tomb Raider,' 'Hitman: Abosolution,' and the still in-development 'Thief 4.' Meanwhile projects in Japan like the relaunching of the 'FFXIV' MMO, and the indefinitely developed 'FFXV/FFXII:Verus' and 'Kingdom Hearts 3' all pale in success to what Square Enix has managed with mobile re-releases and spin-offs like 'Thaetrhythm' and 'Deus Ex: The Fall.'

Hopefully, Square Enix can begin scoring hits in the AAA space before all of their properties are entirely focusing towards the mobile market.

'Graham Parker and The Rumour: This Is Live' Blu-ray Announced

Tags: Shout Factory, Disc Announcements (all tags)

The band's 2012 concert from Judd Apatow's 'This Is 40' is coming to Blu-ray in August.

In an early announcement to retailers, Shout Factory is working on 'Graham Parker and The Rumour: This Is Live' for Blu-ray on August 20.

Shot at the historic Belasco Theater in downtown Los Angeles, This Is Live showcases both classic songs such as "Local Girls" and "Protection" and new favorites including "Stop Cryin' About The Rain" and "Long Emotional Ride." Directed by Judd Apatow, This Is Live contains songs not included in This Is 40. After forming in London in 1975, Graham Parker and The Rumour released their first album in 1976, quickly building a reputation for fiery stage performances as well as witty and often sardonic lyrics. Parker's angry energy preceded the punk movement, and he came to fame just prior to Elvis Costello and Joe Jackson, artists to whom he is compared. Hailed as one of the most important bands of their generation, more than one of Graham Parker and The Rumour's releases have landed on Rolling Stone's Greatest Albums lists, and they have found fans in no less than Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, and of course, Judd Apatow. 1980's The Up Escalator would prove to be Parker's last album with the Rumour, although members of the band would join some of Parker's later recordings. 2012's Three Chords Good found them together again, with 'This Is 40' propelling them back into the limelight.

Tracklisting:

1. Fool's Gold
2. Nobody Hurts You
3. Protection
4. Local Girls
5. Long Emotional Ride
6. She Rocks Me
7. Passion Is No Ordinary Word
8. Discovering Japan
9. Stop Cryin' About The Rain
10. Three Chords Good
11. Stupefaction
12. Soul Shoes

Specs and supplements have yet to be revealed, but suggested list price for the Blu-ray is $21.99.

Ryu Hayabusa Must Die: 'Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z'

Mon Jun 17, 2013 at 12:30 PM ET
Tags: Ninja Gaiden (all tags)

Yaiba emerges as the more accessible and humorous turn of Ninja Gaiden.

Team Ninja has undergone some significant trouble and changes since it brought 'Ninja Gaiden' back for the first Xbox. Each game released by the team seems to be more divisive of fans. That no-win reception may have been key in allowing a much more dramatic departure for the 'Ninja Gaiden' franchise.

In 'Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z,' the focus of the shifts considerably. Yaiba is a character that failed in his first life, having been dispatched by Ryu Hayabusa. Now having been resurrected with full cybernetic enhancements, his jealously of Ryu sparks a quest for revenge. Standing in his way, though, is a zombie apocalypse. For Yaiba, zombies are merely obstacles. Like with a dense jungle, Yaiba must carve his way through the mass to reach his goal.

From executive producer Keiji Inafune, "Yaiba is a rival to Ryu Hayabusa. He hates that Ryu is the ultimate ninja and is stronger than Yaiba. He is obsessed with defeating Ryu. For the story, if someone can give him a hint of finding Hayabusa, the zombies just get in the way. As a character he's a crazy, over-the-top, dirty ninja--the opposite of Ryu. Hayabusa is the proper ninja: cool, calm, worried about honor and doing things the right way. Yaiba is a complement to that, but the opposite: crazy, brutal, he'll do whatever it takes to win a fight. He doesn't care about a code or honor or anything."

Yaiba's straight forward approach and brutish zombie foes mean that the game is easier to pick up than a traditional 'Ninja Gaiden.' Yaiba can dash instead of jumping, with attacking being more necessary than a cautious approach.

"It will be different from Ninja Gaiden, but it will feel like it could be in a Ninja Gaiden game. We'll also have people coming in from zombie games or who like the art style. They might not be familiar with the technical side of Ninja Gaiden. We don't want to make it so difficult that they just rage-quit in two seconds. We have to care for that new audience as well, but there will be systems in place to please the Ninja Gaiden fans."

One thing thus far teased is Yaiba'a ability to rent body parts from zombie's that are then used as weapons such as the Numb Chuck, a set of nun-chucks built from zombie arms. Other zombies can be exploited to progress with the cited example being setting a zombie in a car that drives forward into a barricade, opening up a new path.

"With zombies, there's always that element of dark humor. So when I was coming up with the idea of a game that crossed ninjas and zombies, that's an element you need to put in for the zombies, for the idea to work."

'Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z' is expected in early 2014 for the Xbox 360 and PS3, and is available for pre-order.

Embrace the Literal: Ninja Theory's 'Fightback'

Mon Jun 17, 2013 at 11:30 AM ET

An iOS/Android game from the developers of 'DmC' and 'Heavenly Sword.'

Ninja Theory, the developers of 'Heavenly Sword' and the recent 'DmC: Devil May Cry' reboot, have released their first trailer for their upcoming action title 'Fightback.' The trailer conveys a cheesy B-movie vibe, that while interesting does little to erase the fact that the game is free-to-play for the iOS and Android platforms.

'Fightback' is due later this year and is being published by the EA-backed Chillingo. Ninja Theory has previously released a statement as to why the developer choose to create a mobile title.

From Dominic Matthews, Product Manager, Ninja Theory Ltd, "Mobile and tablet gaming is a phenomenon that we just couldn’t ignore as a studio and we’re very proud to be working with one of the industry’s heavy-weights on bringing Fightback to market. Ninja Theory has always strived for the highest production values and that absolutely remains the case in this exciting new space."

Ultra HD at a Bargain Price: Seiki 50 inch UHD for $966 at Amazon

Seiki's 4K entry over $500 off.

Seiki Digital's SE50UY04, the 50 inch UHD LED LCD set, is currently selling for $966 on Amazon. The normal price of industry's most accessible UHD set is $1500.

Reception for Seiki's 4K set has been mostly positive, with the grand caveat of it being a UHD set without a UHD content pipeline. Multiple 4K devices are inbound, however, including Sony's FMP-X1, the Sony PS4, and Microsoft's Xbox One.

Ultimately, for most people a UHD set without UHD content makes little sense. Some would prefer to at least have a new HDMI spec or DisplayPort before jumping in, still even more people swear that UHD is merely the most marketable snake oil to date. Nevertheless, in June of 2013 Seiki is offering a UHD set for less than a $1000, making their set the cheapest early adopter option by far.
