Weekend Movies: Stupid Does As Stupid Is

With only one new wide release movie this weekend, get ready for ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ to win the box office war again.

Just like last weekend, the movie most worth talking about this week is a reissue. Celebrating its 20th anniversary, Robert Zemeckis’ ‘Forrest Gump’ is not only coming back to the big screen, but to the big big screen. That’s right, America’s favorite ping pong player is making his way to IMAX. Revisit this beautiful film for a reminder of why it won six Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Director, Actor, Adapted Screenplay, Editing and Visual Effects. Please note that this is a one-week run only.

Meanwhile, I’m told that ‘The Identical‘ is the worst Elvis movie that’s not really about Elvis. You see, Elvis Presley had a brother that died during childbirth. ‘The Identical’ proposes the hypothetical question: “What would have happened if Elvis’ brother didn’t die and was actually a separated-at-birth twin who grew up with the exact same interests and talents as Elvis?” Sheesh. The PG-rated picture stars a no-name Elvis lookalike in the leading role(s) as well as Ashley Judd, Ray Liotta and Seth Green in supporting roles.

On the indie front, it appears that Emily Browning is stealing roles away from Zooey Deschanel. In ‘God Help the Girl‘, Browning plays a girl with a great voice (if you’ve heard the ‘Sucker Punch‘ soundtrack, you know that she’s a more-than-capable singer) who copes with her troubles by making musically talented friends and therapeutically performing songs. The tunes they create sound exactly like something Deschanel would perform with her music group She & Him.

I’ve seen the trailers…and it seems like they don’t even actually use the name Elvis in the movie (do they?). I’m sure they didn’t use the music.

I saw the trailer for ‘The Identical’ in front of the Ghostbusters anniversary release, and I could hear my brother mutter “This is the Jackie Jormp Jomp movie!” (see “30 Rock” for an explanation)
