New to VUDU: Week of August 28th, 2011

For me, one of the most compelling things about streaming services such as VUDU (or its competitors, admittedly) is the ability to watch movies in high definition that have no sign of being released on Blu-ray. We get a pretty interesting one of those this week.

The following titles are entering the VUDU stream:

  • ‘The 5th Quarter’ (8/30)
  • ‘American Loser’ (9/1)
  • ‘Angelina Ballerina: Shining Star Trophy’ (8/30)
  • ‘Bereavement’ (8/30)
  • ‘Bikini Girls on Ice’ (8/30)
  • ‘Cherry’ (8/30)
  • ‘Children of the Corn: Genesis’ (8/30)
  • ‘The Concert’ (8/30)
  • ‘Everything Must Go’ (9/2)
  • ‘Forks over Knives’ (8/30)
  • ‘Laugh to Keep from Crying’ (8/30)
  • ‘Madea’s Big Happy Family’ (8/30)
  • ‘Making the Boys’ (9/1)
  • ‘The Motorcycle Diaries’ (9/1)
  • ‘Not Another Not Another Movie ‘ (9/1)
  • ‘Prom’ (8/30)
  • ‘Rory O’Shea Was Here’ (9/1)
  • ‘The Secret Life of Words’ (9/1)
  • ‘Skateland’ (8/30)
  • ‘Submarino’ (9/1)

Technically, I suppose I should acknowledge that ‘The Motorcycle Diaries‘ has been released on Blu-ray in England and (I believe) Australia. Even so, although I have some interest in watching the movie, it isn’t a title that I’d go out of my way or spend a lot of money to import. A rental will suffice. This film about the early days of future revolutionary icon Che Guevara was pretty well received when it was released in 2004. It will probably make a good double bill with Steven Soderberg’s ‘Che‘ (which was released on Blu-ray by Criterion).

Of the newer titles, the only one that stands out for me is ‘Everything Must Go‘, starring Will Ferrell in one of his rare dramatic roles. In this one, he plays a washed-up alcoholic who decides to sell all of his possessions in a yard sale, hoping to start over fresh. The movie generated some buzz on the festival circuit last year, but then disappeared in general release. The trailer looks promising.

Although not listed above, VUDU is also adding 3D versions of Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland’ and ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ on 8/30. However, both are only available for purchase at the present time, not for rental.

Josh’s Random VUDU Pick:

Once more, I will dig through the VUDU archives to pull out a random recommendation that might be worth your time if the new releases aren’t doing it for you. This week’s pick goes to ‘The Hudsucker Proxy‘, which should tie in nicely with all the other Coen brothers movies being released on Blu-ray today. (Sadly, I can’t imagine that this one is on the Warner Bros. Blu-ray radar at all.) This screwball farce is a bit out-there, and was the directors’ first box office bomb, but it’s very witty and inventive nonetheless. Also, I can practically guarantee that after seeing this, you’ll want to trot out the phrase “You know, for kids” in all sorts of situations for years to come, much to the bewilderment of whomever you’re talking to.

All dates provided refer specifically to rental availability. Check VUDU for sell-through availability, if interested. Be sure to also check for VUDU’s $0.99 Movie of the Day offers, which are announced each day on the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
