New to VUDU: Week of August 21st, 2011

If the Blu-ray release slate looks a little thin this week, the VUDU rental offerings are perhaps even slimmer. However, there’s at least one movie worth a look. I’ll also pull another random recommendation out of the VUDU catalog to give you something else to watch.

The following titles enter the VUDU stream this week:

  • ‘Beyond Limits’ (8/23)
  • ‘Blitz’ (8/23)
  • ‘The Chamelion’ (8/23)
  • ‘Closed for the Season’ (8/23)
  • ‘Cold Fish’ (8/23)
  • ‘DeRay Davis: Power Play’ (8/23)
  • ‘The Elephant in the Living Room’ (8/23)
  • ‘Henry’s Crime’ (8/23)
  • ‘House of the Fallen’ (8/23)
  • ‘Little Big Soldier’ (8/23)
  • ‘The Little Match Makers’ (8/23)
  • ‘Road to Nowhere’ (8/23)
  • ‘Super Hybrid’ (8/23)
  • ‘Win Win’ (8/23)
  • ‘WWE: Greatest Superstars of the 21st Century’ (8/23)

The most promising title on this list is ‘Win Win‘. I talked about this one in my Blu-ray recap this morning. This Paul Giamatti movie was an audience favorite at the Sundance Film Festival, and has generated a lot of buzz for its strong performances. Here’s the trailer:

The Keanu Reeves bank heist caper ‘Henry’s Crime‘ received more of a mixed reaction on the festival circuit and in limited release, but might be worth a rental. The trailer is awfully teal for my taste, though.

The Japanese serial killer thriller ‘Cold Fish‘ looks rather dark and disturbing. This one also made the festival rounds last year. It does not appear to be getting a Blu-ray release, so VUDU will be your best quality option if you think it looks interesting.

I would have thought that Jason Statham is a big enough star by now that his new movies wouldn’t be going direct-to-video. Nonetheless, that’s exactly what’s happening with the British crime flick ‘Blitz‘. The trailer doesn’t do much for me, but Statham fans might want to give it a shot.

Josh’s Random VUDU Pick:

If the week’s new releases aren’t floating your boat, I’ll once again skim through the wealth of titles in the VUDU catalog that don’t have comparable Blu-ray editions. This week’s random recommendation goes to Roman Polanski’s classic supernatural thriller ‘Rosemary’s Baby‘. How is this fabulous movie not available on Blu-ray yet? That’s a mystery to me, but at least you can watch it in HDX 1080p quality on VUDU.

All dates provided refer specifically to rental availability. Check VUDU for sell-through availability, if interested. Be sure to also check for VUDU’s $0.99 Movie of the Day offers, which are announced each day on the company’s Facebook and Twitter pages.
