Videogame Releases: Week of May 25th, 2014

This week brings two extraordinary things for gamers: The much-hyped and much-delayed ‘Watch Dogs’ has finally come out, and the Wii U actually has a must-own game.

Watch Dogs (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3, PC)

After a very public delay that caused the game to miss a concurrent launch with the new consoles, ‘Watch Dogs‘ is finally here with one of the biggest launches to date – meaning that many gamers will buy it, play it, and likely be disappointed by it.

Combining a sci-fi story about hackers with bits of ‘Assassin’s Creed’ and ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and a dash of digital paranoia, the third-person open-world game is slick at times and bloated at others. A Wii U version is promised at a later date.

The Wolf Among Us: In Sheep’s Clothing (PS3, 360, PC)

The penultimate episode of ‘The Wolf Among Us, called ‘In Sheep’s Clothing‘, may define the high water mark for Telltale Games. After the last two episodes really pushed Bigby to the brink, a new villain appears on the scene. If you haven’t given the series a try yet, just know that I like it as much as the extremely popular ‘The Walking Dead’ games series.

Mario Kart 8 (Wii U)

The ‘Mario Kart’ series has been extremely popular at every turn, yet has also felt a little stale and a little too wacky for some players. With ‘Mario Kart 8‘, the series goes HD. The game has carts and motorcycles, but the anti-grav and stunning visuals are what really get fans clamoring. Not only is this the very rare compelling title for the Wii U, Nintendo has a scheme where buyers can register the game with Club Nintendo and then get a free digital version of either ‘New Super Mario Bros. U’, ‘Pikmin 3’, ‘The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD’ or ‘Wii Party U’ to sweeten the deal.

Mind Zero (Vita)

Thanks to Aksys, western audiences will get a crack at ‘Mind Zero‘, an RPG wherein players form a bond with a powerful mind. With that powerful mind-link comes incredible powers and the possibility of brutal corruption. Of course, this temptation is challenging for a high school student to face.

Mario Kart may be what I need to push me into buying a Wii U. There are now three games I am interested in that are Wii U exclusives, Wii Us are selling used for $240, which isn’t bad. I’ll wait a few more months, though – by then I should be able to start getting good deals on used games

  2. I picked up Watch Dogs, but haven’t had a chance to play it yet…probably not until the weekend. I don’t consider myself a hardcore gamer by any means (I probably buy a half dozen games per year), so hopefully I’ll enjoy it more than many of the hardcore players who aren’t happy with it.
