Videogame Releases: Week of February 27th, 2011

The last few weeks have been full of great videogame releases, but not this week. The most interesting thing coming out is an expansion to a PC-exclusive RTS not named ‘StarCraft’, which makes it a hard sell to most.

Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II Retribution (PC)

‘Dawn of War’ is a highly underappreciated real-time strategy series. It suffers from the fate of being a relative newcomer to the scene and an association with a complex and very nerdy war game that uses miniatures. The games, especially ‘Dawn of War II’, speak for themselves.

If you haven’t checked out ‘Dawn of War II’ but you’re a fan of RTS games, then this is a good time to start. The ‘Retribution’ expansion is a standalone, which means that you don’t have to own the original title to play it. If you’re not sure about the series, you can even download a demo of ‘Dawn of War II’ on Steam.

Rift (PC)

Rift is a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG) that offers you to take on the role of a tank, healer, or damage-dealer in a unique fantasy world full of blah, blah, blah, blah, blah.

Are you a ‘World of Warcraft’ player bored with ‘World of Warcraft’? Try ‘Rift’. You’ll get really into it for a month or two and then go back to ‘WoW’.

It’s really hard to get excited about an MMO that isn’t obviously different and new, and most of them don’t fare well. If you’re really looking for something to sink your teeth into, wait for ‘Old Republic’ this spring.
