Videogame Releases: Week of February 12th, 2012

There are plenty of new videogames today for hapless nerds who are stuck inside without Valentine’s Day plans. In other words, plenty of new games for me! This week’s releases should prove interesting. Two of them are revivals of franchises that we haven’t seen in some time.

SSX (360, PS3)

It’s been a long time since we’ve had a new ‘SSX’ game and I’m damn excited about this one. The ‘SSX’ series always offered me something that other titles didn’t, and I’m hoping that the franchise reboot or re-imagining or whatever it is will continue with that trend.

My sister and I used to play games together back when we both lived with the folks. One of our favorites was ‘SSX 3’. ‘Tricky’ was good as well, but we played the third game for hours on end. ‘SSX’ has a decidedly different mood and gets rid of the look that was so appealing in earlier games, but if the gameplay is still there, I’ll be a happy man.

Twisted Metal (PS3)

Here’s another franchise we haven’t heard much from in a while. Based on what’s going on behind the scenes, it doesn’t seem likely we’ll hear from it again. ‘Twisted Metal’ brings back all that vehicular combat that we know and love, but with Jaffe leaving the company and no promise of patches or DLC, this game may be dead in the water. I’m hoping for good things, but a multiplayer game without updates is a game that only stays entertaining for so long.

UFC Undisputed (360, PS3)

I can’t tell you the difference between one MMA game and the next, but I can tell you that ‘UFC Undisputed’ introduces Pride into the series for the first time. I’ve always dug Pride Fighting. It goes hand in hand with Japanese wrestling, which was an obsession of mine for a while. That new element should add a lot to the game for fans of Pride.

Dick, You sure about SSX this week? I thought it was Feb. 28th according to Gamespot.

I too was a big fan of the SSX3. Since it was defined course race, it was much more focused and fun to me. Also, I am probably in the minority on this, but I loved watching myself do also sorts of stupid stuff during the full race palyback after you were finished. Many laughs.

    • Dang, you’re right! Guess I was a little too excited about it, lol. And I definitely loved watching those full race playbacks 🙂

The thing about the new SSX is that it’s about to ruin the image and the style that I’m used to. It looks funny, though it’ll still make money, see. I just kind of wish it was more like 3.
