The Trailer Park: Snow White Showdown

This week’s pair of coming attractions is like some kind of test made up entirely of trick questions. Which of the new ‘Snow White’ adaptations looks worse? Guess what, no matter which you choose, you’re going to pick the wrong answer.

‘Mirror Mirror’

The first of next year’s new interpretations of the classic Grimm fairy tale is directed by the usually-impressive visual stylist Tarsem Singh (‘The Fall‘, ‘Immortals’). ‘Mirror Mirror’ stars Julia Roberts as dead weight. I wish I were kidding about that. Unfortunately, the A-list superstar really looks like she’s phoning it in here and completely hamming it up. As the villainous Queen, she not only fails to offer a sense of threat to Lily Collins’s Snow White, but she also doesn’t strike me as a person who means harm to anyone else. In the end, it seems as if filmmakers aspire for something akin to ‘Wicked’ while keeping to Disney’s classic version. In either case, the trailer doesn’t convince me to watch it any time soon.

‘Snow White & the Huntsman’

Looking more like a Tarsem Singh movie than Tarsem Singh’s own movie is this darker, gothic take on the ‘Snow White’ tale. This preview actually peaks my interest primarily due to the visuals, and Charlize Theron makes a believable villain. It’ll likely fall somewhere between Tim Burton’s ‘Alice in Wonderland‘ and Catherine Hardwicke’s ‘Red Riding Hood‘, which on my scale means between slightly above average and god-awful boring. Honestly, I’m not all that excited to find out where it might actually fall. Even worse, who thought Kristen Stewart would make a good Snow White? The dreadful emo actress with a twisted snarl that she calls a smile is just too much of a stretch to be “the fairest of the land.”

  1. the huntsman looks the worse to me. i like Theron but never really warmed to her as an actress even less so with Stewart. and right after teal look the dark story-telling theme in movies is starting to lose it luster. and its snow white not Joan of ark.

    Couldn`t agree more.
Mirror Mirror looks way too Disney for Tarsem. I don`t really care for this one, but am kinda thrilled for “SW & the Huntsman”.
I think Kristen Stewart makes a good Snow White, she`s not the fairest of the land, but pretty hot anyway.

Interesting play on words. Many may not know this, but the book “Mirror, Mirror” was written by Gregory Maguire, who also wrote the “Wicked” trilogy.

‘Mirror Mirror’ looks like community theater.

Of the two Snow Whites, Lily Collins is the daughter of Phil Collins, which mostly makes me think of that monologue in ‘American Psycho.’

Monica Bellucci would be an interesting queen.

    Chris Hemsworth is fine.

But I still think the best way to reboot the IP would be to have Jean-Pierre Jeunet adapt Donald Barthelme’s ‘Snow White.’ R-Rated for the shower room gangbangs, and the random acts of dwarven violence.
