The Trailer Park: What Is This?

This set of trailers goes to the WTF movies – films that leave me wondering what goes on in the minds of the filmmakers. One of them is pretty much a remake, and should rightfully be acknowledged as such. The other is a promising dramedy with teased-out hair and make-up, but still fairly weird, with a unique plot that makes me want to watch it all the more.

‘Servitude’

What the crap is this? Seriously, was ‘Waiting… Part 3’ taken or something? You could practically sue the makers of this major turd and very likely win. The whole thing is nearly identical to the Ryan Reynolds-Justin Long debacle, but amazingly looks even worse – much worse. This Canadian production (or could we technically call it a “reimagining”?) is so embarrassingly horrible to watch, even in this two minute excerpt. Maybe if the Rob McKittrick comedy hadn’t come out first, this might have a chance. Then again, maybe not. It still looks utterly horrible.

‘This Must Be the Place’

Set to release in March, this preview has me completely speechless. I just don’t know what to think of this. The plot itself is weird and way out there. And then we have all these amazing images of Sean Penn as some kind of washed-up Goth rocker who obviously hasn’t changed much over the decades. The dramedy was the talk of the town at Cannes, so I take that as a good sign. I’m also a fan of Penn, both as a director and actor with a very discerning taste. I trust that he’s taking part because he also believes it to be worthwhile material. Still, the preview makes the whole thing seem so weird – my kind of stuff. I’m also a big fan of Talking Heads, so I’m in for sure. I’ll try to keep expectations fairly low and hopefully be pleasantly surprised.

  1. I was going to see ‘This Must Be the Place’ at Sundance, and then decided not to go. I was glad. I think it was, by consensus, the worst movie at the festival. Everyone I spoke to said it was mind-bogglingly awful.

    Yeah, the trailer is pretty bizarre.

    @Aaron,
    Well, that sucks. Lots of buzz from Cannes caught my interest, but the opposite at Sundance now has me worried.

    • Yeah. It was the only movie that press members went out of their way to comment in line, “Did you see ‘This Must Be the Place?’ It’s (string of expletives) awful!”

      Usually I can find one or two people who go against the grain at Sundance who like movies movies most everyone hated or hated movie that most everyone liked. I didn’t find one person, or overhear one person talk about even remotely liking ‘This Must Be the Place.’
