The Trailer Park: ‘Robo’ Copy

Given Hollywood’s current passion for rehashing old favorites instead of coming up with new or original ideas, it’s not shocking that someone has tried to modernize another ’80s action classic. Still, I’m at a loss for words with this one.

‘RoboCop’ (2014)

A remake of Paul Verhoeven’s action movie satire? Did we really need this? I’m swirling with all sorts of mixed emotions at the moment, and I’m not sure how to react to the trailer, which looks like it could be fun. I want to say that this looks awesome and I’ll be the first line to watch it on the biggest screen possible. I mean, come on, it has Gary Oldman, Samuel L. Jackson and Michael Keaton, for crying out loud! At the same time, I’m somewhat horrified that this was made at all. I’ll reserve judgment for now.

‘The Art of the Steal’

Granted, this movie looks cheap and low-rent, like the producers probably spent the majority of the budget acquiring the talents of Kurt Russell, which I’m sure at this point in his career doesn’t come with too a hefty price tag. Yet I’m willing to give this little flick a chance – more likely on Blu-ray than on the big screen. Perhaps I just like Russell, and the prospect of seeing him work alongside Jay Baruchel, Matt Dillon and Terence Stamp intrigues me. Or perhaps I just love heist movies in general and want to see if this third-rate production about a third-rate daredevil can pull one over me.

‘The Monuments Men’

What I enjoy better than a heist movie is a good war movie, and this George Clooney-directed drama looks to be excellent. Well, to be perfectly honest, I’m not entirely sold by the preview, which suggests a lighthearted comedy with some serious dramatic moments, but also makes me think that it’s pure Oscar-bait. With Bill Murray, John Goodman and Matt Damon rounding out the main cast, I think I could love the film, especially seeing the older guys go through boot camp. Even so, I’ll probably wait for reviews before deciding whether to watch it in theaters.

A robocop movie without satire and paul verhoeven over-the-top violence is just going to be a generic dumb cyborg movie.

Should be about as successful as the recent Total Recall remake. Verhoeven is unique and there should be a law against anybody trying to remake or sequelize his work.

Josh, off topic, but how far do you have your projectors located from your screen? The space I am going to use only allows me to get the recliners about 12 feet away from the screen so I’m pretty sure I will go with an eight foot scope screen. Now trying to figure out if I should ceiling mount or use a closet behind the recliners, with some air ventilation, to make a little projection booth. Any insights?

Also just got wind of this new documentary on Jodorowsky’s failed Dune movie. Do you know anything about it, seen it? I had read the books and was a huge Pink Floyd fan when this was current news and am very curious. I know his version probably wouldn’t be in your wheelhouse, he is beyond “out there”, but curious if you know anything about it.

      • The Jodorowsky documentary played at Cannes, Telluride and some other festivals. It was picked up for distribution by Sony and will open in North America on March 7th, 2014. I’m fascinated to see it. Although Jodorowsky’s movie would have been an absolutely terrible adaptation of the Frank Herbert novel, it sounds like it would have been a pretty crazy movie in its own right.

I’ll move your other question to my most recent “Building a Home Theater” post.

    • I can tell already, unless there are some surprises, this movie is going to stink and will likely make a ton of money. So we won’t get a decent Robocop movie for another 20 years because of sequels. We will likely get a REAL robocop before that happens.

  2. Matthias Schoenaerts was offered the Robocop role, but he declined, stating it wasn’t the ideal career move to make. Judging by the trailer, it seems he made the right choice. It looks to be silly and exciting, but mostly silly. Could still be good, though.
