The Trailer Park: Action, Action and More Action!

The headline pretty much says it all. The following trailers for a few action-packed features promise to get hearts pumping with things that explode real good. Sadly, only one of them actually looks worth getting excited about.

‘Homefront’

The hardest working actor in Hollywood spews forth another movie in which he plays a tough, grumpy and very capable-with-his-fists hero with a heart of gold who gets caught in the criminal underground with… Oh, you know the rest. It’s just another Statham movie. But wait! Is that James Franco doing a Southern white-trash version of his character from ‘Spring Breakers’? Well, that’s at least a little different, right? Sadly, I can’t really answer that question until the movie hits Blu-ray. Even then, I don’t know that I can devote enough time to sitting through what looks like another typical Statham movie.

‘Non-Stop’

Speaking of an actor who essentially performs the same character in every action picture, Liam Neeson is here pretty much regurgitating his version of the tough, grumpy and very capable-with-his-fists hero. Only, he’s older and a better actor. If given the choice, I generally prefer Neeson over Stratham – even if this movie looks a little too much like another ‘Die Hard’ on a plane. (Remember ‘Passenger 57’, ‘Executive Decision’ or ‘Air Force One’?) Still, the plot seems intriguing enough for me to give it a chance on Blu-ray.

‘Captain America: The Winter Soldier’

Holy crap! Is that Robert Redford in a Marvel movie!? Aside from that small surprise, I’m not entirely sold on this follow-up to 2011’s superhero adaptation. Not that it looks bad, but the plot seems heavily convoluted with notions of government conspiracies and espionage double-crossings. While the visuals look pretty damn amazing, the story hints at the Cap working as some kind of covert spy uncovering some very dirty laundry which connects back to Redford’s character. Of course, since Winter Soldier is now part of the storyline, I guess it shouldn’t be a surprise that the movie would be precisely about those things. Despite my mild hesitation, there’s no doubt that I’ll see this sequel on the big screen.

I’m won over by Liam Neeon’s trailer. But it revealed a little much of the plot. Now we now the hook for Act 2 of the film.

Capt America’s trailer looks great. More Black Widow, more Scarlett Johansson is always a good thing. I hope she’s in more the film than what was shown in the trailer. SHIELD is wise to have her be the initial/primary contact with Hulk in Avengers, with Iron Man in Iron Man 2, and I hope with Capt in Winter Soldier.

    Let’s hope Capt’s villain in Winter Soldier isn’t an over-the-top fire-breathing dragon/man/bomb like Iron Man 3 was.
