The Trailer Park: The Lone Ronin Counselor

As we prepare for the cold, chilly winds of autumn, the Hollywood studios are releasing their fall lineup of trailers, hoping to warm the hearts of moviegoers, or at least generate some anticipation. Of the three previews gathered today, only one piques my interest enough to watch on the big screen.

‘The Counselor’

Despite having already written three other screenplays that sadly went nowhere, this is the first original script from master novelist Cormac McCarthy to actually be produced. The trailer is rather haunting in a disturbing and creepy sort of way that leaves me unsettled. Ridley Scott’s last few films have been average at best, if not disappointing (though I’m sure some would disagree), but if this modern-day Southern Gothic crime tale delivers on what the trailer promises, the director could certainly redeem himself in my eyes.

‘Lone Survivor’

No one would ever confuse Mark Wahlberg for an Academy Award winning actor, but that doesn’t stop the man from trying. He’s at least capable of getting the job done and delivering performances that most audiences find entertaining. In this production written and directed by Peter Berg, the former rapper joins a funky bunch of marines on a special mission that puts them in severe danger. From the looks of it, Wahlberg will be in his serious, dramatic acting mode. If that fails, we still have what seems like a pretty entertaining action flick.

’47 Ronin’

Director Carl Erik Rinsch makes his feature-length debut in this fantasy version of the Japanese samurai legend. From what see in this two-and-a-half-minute preview, the epic CGI spectacular feels like a crazy blend of the wuxia genre with elements borrowed from ‘The Matrix’. Telling audiences that Keanu Reeves’ character is “the One” is probably just the first similarity. Nonetheless, the action-packed trailer is a good deal of fun in my 5.1 surround system.

    • And to that I would say, yes. Yes, the Academy must have confused him with someone else, or they must have really high to even think he should be nominated playing caricature of a stereotype.

Don’t get me wrong. He was good in the movie, as was the rest of the cast, and the film itself was excellent, but I don’t think he delivered anything worthy of nomination.
