The Trailer Park: Reach with an Iron Fist

Just because the summer movie season is halfway over doesn’t mean that we won’t see another crop of action extravaganzas before the end of the year. In fact, two reasonably good-looking flicks may end 2012 with a bang.

‘Jack Reacher’

I actually don’t know much about the Jack Reacher character, other than that he’s an antihero detective in a series of books by Lee Child. This new movie with Tom Cruise is an adaptation of the novel ‘One Shot’. Going by the trailer, I may need to get started on reading this man’s crime adventures fast. I love the start of the preview, from the roar of the engine rumbling and rattling as some poor sap in the hospital warns of the character’s own brand of justice. This is only a teaser, but man, it’s pretty badass.

‘The Man with the Iron Fists’

RZA announces his debut as writer and director with an iron fist straight to the gut in this kung-fu epic. Eli Roth is credited as producer and helped fine-tune the rapper’s screenplay. The movie looks like a good deal of fun in the fashion of classic ’70s martial arts flicks. It looks to be an over-the-top spectacle of wild fight choreography and CGI mayhem, like the dude who suddenly transforms into a solid-gold statue. Although we don’t get too see much of him, I like what I see of Russell Crowe as some kind of American gunslinger who’s also good with knives. I won’t likely see this in theaters, but it’ll definitely get a spin on Blu-ray.

‘Jack Reacher’ is what happens when you let Christopher McQuarrie write and direct. I can’t believe it’s been 12 years since ‘The Way Of The Gun.’

An even cooler trailer in the same genre is Andrew Dominik’s ‘Killing Them Softly.’ I love this niche of 70s-style pulp novel filmmaking.
