The Trailer Park: Insidious Machete Prisoners

The next Machete adventure packs more over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek action and a larger cast, but the sequel to the surprising ‘Insidious’ looks largely like a repeat of the first. Meanwhile, French Canadian filmmaker Denis Villeneuve returns with another emotionally gut-wrenching film that’s sure to attract a great deal of praise and attention.

‘Machete Kills’

The tagline for Robert Rodriguez’s grindhouse homage sequel should read: “It’s the action-packed thrill ride Lady Gaga fans having been waiting for,” and the movie should be retitled ‘Machete Kills Lady Gaga’. Sadly, that will never happen. Instead, Danny Trejo returns as the awesome killing machine, this time personally requested by Charlie Sheen, credited under his real name Carlos Estévez for the first time. Featuring a slew of enjoyable actors such as Mel Gibson, Antonio Banderas and Sofía Vergara, this looks like a decently fun follow-up.

‘Insidious: Chapter 2’

Personally, I like what James Wan, Leigh Whannell and Jason Blum did with the haunted house theme back in 2011. The trio return with Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne to find out what happens to the Lambert family and their paranormal friends next. Unfortunately, the preview looks like the filmmakers are just repeating the same tricks that worked in the first movie. The sequel seems like it’ll deliver on the creepiness factor, but the trailer fails to excite me. Hopefully, it’ll manage to surprise like its predecessor.

‘Prisoners’

Of this week’s three trailers, this is probably the strongest and definitely the most intense. Hugh Jackman, Jake Gyllenhaal and the rest of the cast promise to deliver some electrifying, gut-wrenching performances. The emotionally-taut crime drama comes from Denis Villeneuve, the director behind the amazing ‘Incendies‘ and the impressive ‘Maelström’. With him at the helm and a good cast in front of the camera, my fingers are crossed that the final cut will be as exciting as the trailer makes it out to be.

  1. Incendies was terrific. The trailer for Prisoners looks pretty great too.

The Machete sequel looks even worse than the first one, which is saying a lot, because the first one utterly sucked. Robert Rodriguez needs to take a break and stop making movies for a good long while.
