The Trailer Park: More Motherf**king Alien Bugs!

In this week’s batch of previews, spies infiltrate local radical groups, near-future society is purged of its wicked desires, and we fight another alien bug invasion.

‘The East’

Brit Marling made a great impression with ‘Another Earth‘ and continued to satisfy with ‘Sound of My Voice‘. The talented young filmmaker returns with another slyly captivating yarn about people with intriguing lifestyles. This little thriller is about a radical anti-consumer group that practices “Freeganism.” The trailer doesn’t share enough to really make it a point, but we get the gist that the plot incorporates some espionage elements into the mix. I’m also glad to see Marling attract some star power in her productions.

‘Ender’s Game’

If we’re going to be honest, one of the reasons I’m interested to see this sci-fi fantasy is that I remember reading the book once when I was younger. Unfortunately, I don’t recall being particularly impressed with it, though I recollect being mildly entertained by the story of a young boy recruited by the military to be a fleet commander. The trailer doesn’t stir any other memories beyond that, which could be why I’ve largely forgotten the book series. Nonetheless, the movie looks pretty cool and action-packed. However, the ridiculously stupid and homophobic comments made by series author Orson Scott Card make me think that I can wait to rent it on Blu-ray.

‘The Purge’

The latest from the writer and producer of ‘The Negotiator‘ and the remake of ‘Assault on Precinct 13‘ offers a pretty messed-up concept for a sci-fi thriller. Set in the not-too-distant future, the year 2022 to be exact, our current economic and political situation will finally be resolved with one very twisted and insane annual tradition: All manner of crime and violence is legally permissible for a 12-hour block. That’s a really screwy way to resolve one’s personal issues with your neighbors. I really want to see this!

Can’t wait for Enders Game, one of my favorite SF novels.
I heard the reason it’s taken so long, is the movie companies wanted Ender to be played by a 20 something pretending to be a 16 year old. But Orson said no.

Orson is my hero, and people who boykot him don’t know good art. Because great artist usually are assholes, goody-two-shoes just aren’t creative.

    • In the book, Ender is 6-years-old when the story starts. By the end, he’s 11. All of the characters in the movie have been bumped up to teenagers. Asa Butterfield, who plays Ender, is 16.

I know good art. I would agree that the first Ender’s Game book is good art, but the sequels are all garbage, and Card has clearly lost his mind in recent years. He’s no hero of mine.

Ender’s Game was a pretty good book, but it wasn’t the action part that was so great, it was the character developement and interior dreams of the character that were really fascinating. I don’t know how they are going to handle that in this movie. That kind of stuff usually doesn’t translate too well to film unless there is a very gifted director.

    • The movie is said to combine Ender’s Game with the fifth book, Ender’s Shadow, which retells the same story from another character’s perspective. That will allegedly allow the movie to externalize story points that were internalized in the first book.

‘Ender’s Game’s screenwriter-director directed ‘X-Men Origins: Wolverine’ / played German Champion in ‘Kickboxer 5’ so I have high hopes for this.

  3. William Henley

I had never read Ender’s Game, but I want to now. I did a marketing survey a couple of months ago with incomplete trailers (the unfinished CG was really funny), and I cannot believe how much this trailer was recut from the early trailers I saw. When I saw the original cuts, I said “It looks like The Hunger Games – in space”. This looks way more action packed than what I was shown, and portrays a completely different story. I like this trailer a LOT more than the two they showed me. I am now actually excited to see this movie.

Also, the trailer I saw pretty much said “staring Harrison Ford, Abigail Breslin and Asa Butterfield”. I had no clue Ben Kingsley was in it from the original trailer I saw

    • If the movie is even remotely faithful to the book, then this trailer contains literally every piece of action in the story, right up to and including the ending.

However, I don’t expect the movie to be faithful to the book.

Interesting question for you (and whoever else wants to weigh in) – how far from the book do you think the story can go and still remain faithful to the book?

I consider the following movies to be faithful to the books:
        The Hunger Games
        Harry Potter 1-2, 5-8

The following are departures from the book, but still have the same feel:
        Harry Potter 3
        Jurassic Park
        Gone With The Wind
Twilight Saga (although I have only seen the first two movies)
        Interview With The Vampire

HUGE departure from the book to the point that its almost a different story:
        Jurassic Park: The Lost World
        Harry Potter 4
        Blade Runner
        I, Robot
        Queen of the Damned
        Battlefield Earth

        • Being from the director of X-Men Origins: Wolverine, I expect this to fall on the Queen of the Damned/Battlefield Earth end of that scale. But we shall see. I’m not impressed by the trailer.

  4. Never read the book (despite being a huge reader of science fiction, I just never got round to this one!) but it looks interesting. Kind of a teenage ‘Soldier’. 😉 I wonder if they’ll bump into Kurt Russel, who’ll just kick their arses for being young un-seasoned whipper snappers? 😀
