The Trailer Park: Bourne on Super Bowl Sunday

While I’m sure others tuned in to see the Broncos pull off a win over the Panthers on Sunday, I watched the Super Bowl for the commercials – more specifically, for the movie trailers.

‘Jason Bourne’

The tagline “You Know His Name” has got to be the best way to promote the fifth installment to the Bourne series. Damn right, you know his name. When he sets his sights on a target, he doesn’t stop until his mission is complete. This is quickly followed by very brief glimpses of the mayhem and panic left in Bourne’s wake, making those in high-ranking government positions sweat with apprehension. The teaser is only half a minute long, but man, it’s enough to generate some excitement to see the character one more time.

’10 Cloverfield Lane’

It feels like this sequel to J.J. Abram’s 2008 giant monster thriller has completely gone under the radar. Despite starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and John Goodman, the film has received very little promotion. Apparently, it’s not even a direct follow-up, but something Abrams calls “a blood relative” and directed by a complete unknown. From the little we’re allowed to see, it might take place in the same universe. Either way, I’m not really in any rush to watch this in the theater, but maybe on Blu-ray.

‘X-Men: Apocalypse’

As if anticipation wasn’t already high enough for the next ‘X-Men’ installment, this 30-second sneak peek will probably have fanboys crawling up the walls with excitement. However, this very short preview doesn’t do much for me. Granted, it has a couple spots that whet my appetite, such as Oliva Munn’s Psylocke and the seeming annihilation of Earth, but overall it’s the same stuff we’ve seen in the longer trailers. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still excited, but this particular preview doesn’t do it for me.

‘Captain America: Civil War’

By contrast, the newest trailer for the third entry in the ‘Captain America’ storyline offers new clips with a couple surprises that I’m sure will leave fanboys with their eyes bulging out their heads. “Holy crap! Bucky Barnes just fired a gun at Tony Stark’s face!?” As chants play overhead with a militaristic rhythm, we’re left wondering the fate of War Machine, and if there might be a connection with Iron Man saying the Capt. chose the wrong side. Best of all is the final image where we see Ant-Man, Hawkeye and Scarlet Witch standing opposite Vision, Black Widow and Black Panther. Wow!

‘Independence Day: Resurgence’

Arguably, the half-minute trailer for the ‘Independence Day’ sequel blows all the others out the water. Well, except for maybe the ‘Jason Bourne’ one. Still, this is pretty damn good, and boldly states that if you only have 30 seconds to promote a film, then do it with a massive display of utter destruction and possible extermination. From the looks of things, ‘Resurgence’ promises bigger and more grandiose scenes of annihilation than its predecessor. I’ll certainly be in line waiting to witness the whole thing.

Bourne and Civil War have me most excited. I remember the secrecy with Cloverfield worked really well, and this has me almost as intrigued. I really like Goodman and Winstead. That being said, I’d really feel let down if there isn’t a giant beastie in this one. There should be at least one Kaiju flick a year in the domestic market (at least in my book).

  2. Jesus, am I wrong for being excited about every single one of these?! I honestly want to quit my job tommorow, get one at my local theatre, set up a cot in the projection room and JUST FUCKING LIVE THERE.

So it’s an X-Men movie with the plot of every Marvel movie and a Marvel movie with the plot of every X-Men movie? Weird how that worked out.

X-Men trailer felt like a tv show trailer. Here’s why: tv shows are nororious for the stupid practice of taking a well know song, slowing it down and taking out most of the music and putting some emo chick singing it like a dirge. I HATE this. It must be stopped!! Herion emo chick singing dirge versions of songs must stop!
