Weekend Roundtable: Into Darkness

Weekend Roundtable: Into Darkness

These days, it seems like any even remotely popular movie franchise is required to get the dark and gritty reboot treatment. Everything is “Dark” this or “Darkness” that. ‘Star Trek’ is just the latest example. What happened to the days when summer movies could just be fun without their characters turning into brooding vigilantes hell-bent on revenge for something or other? It may be a while before we see that again. In the meantime, we use today’s Roundtable to make some predictions for the next major properties destined to go dark.

Weekend Roundtable: Favorite Movie & TV Moms

Mother’s Day is coming up on Sunday. Did you remember to mail your mother a nice card and flowers? After everything she’s done for you, a little appreciation is the least you can offer in return. In honor of this most important holiday, we thought that today’s Roundtable would be a good time to celebrate some of our favorite fictional moms from the worlds of film and TV.

Weekend Roundtable: Inappropriate Videogame Tie-Ins

Weekend Roundtable: Inappropriate Videogame Tie-Ins

Last month, we had a Roundtable about movies that would be inappropriate to convert to 3D. This week, we bring you a similar topic. As much as the videogame industry loves to license movie titles for the easy brand name recognition, some movies should really never, ever be turned into tie-in games. Here are some of the worst ideas we could imagine.

Weekend Roundtable: Second Chances

Weekend Roundtable: Second Chances

Sometimes, we just can’t properly appreciate a movie on first viewing. Perhaps the marketing misled us into expecting something entirely different than what we’d actually get, perhaps we set impossibly high expectations that no movie could possibly meet, or perhaps we were just in a bad mood the day we first saw it. Whatever the reason, some films require a second (or sometimes third or even more) viewing before we can recognize their best qualities. In this week’s Roundtable, we revisit some of the movies that we just didn’t “get” the first time around.

Weekend Roundtable: Movie-to-TV Spin-Offs

Weekend Roundtable: Movie-to-TV Spin-Offs

Network executives love spinning off movies into TV shows. With a popular title comes instant brand recognition. Sometimes this works (‘M*A*S*H’). Often it doesn’t. Two of the most promising shows currently on the air (‘Bates Motel’ and ‘Hannibal’) are spun-off from movies. In this week’s Roundtable, we try to think of some other movie titles that might work in episodic TV form.

Weekend Roundtable: Inappropriate 3D Conversions

Weekend Roundtable: Inappropriate 3D Conversions

These days, Hollywood is eager to convert just about any old movie to 3D in hopes of re-releasing it to theaters and milking it for a few extra bucks. However, it seems to us that some films just plain wouldn’t be appropriate for the 3D treatment. In today’s Roundtable, we unleash some of our worst ideas for movies that really shouldn’t ever come at ya’ in 3D.

Weekend Roundtable: Favorite Zombie Movies

With Easter and the season finale of ‘The Walking Dead’ both coming up on Sunday (you don’t think that’s a coincidence, do you?), we thought that today’s Roundtable would be a good opportunity to look at some of our favorite movies about the dead rising from the grave.

Weekend Roundtable: Kickstarting Canceled TV Shows

Weekend Roundtable: Kickstarting Canceled TV Shows

We learned this week that the beloved but short-lived TV series ‘Veronica Mars’ will be resurrected as a new movie financed by fans thanks to the power of social fundraising site Kickstarter. In today’s Roundtable, we discuss other famously canceled-before-their-time TV shows that we’d gladly chip in to bring back from the dead.

Weekend Roundtable: Who Should Direct the Next James Bond Movie?

Weekend Roundtable: Who Should Direct the Next James Bond Movie?

After the blazing success of ‘Skyfall’, Sam Mendes has turned down the offer to direct the next James Bond movie, claiming that he wants to devote himself to theater for a while. All things considered, that’s probably a wise career move on his part. How do you top a billion-dollar blockbuster? Almost anything is destined to be seen as a disappointment. Better to go out on top. Nevertheless, James Bond will return, and somebody will have to direct the next movie. In this week’s Roundtable, we offer some suggestions.
