Weekend Roundtable: Inmates Running the Asylum

The Asylum, that purveyor of ultra-low-budget DTV schlock like ‘Transmorphers‘ and ‘Almighty Thor‘, is back this week with the Blu-ray release of yet another rip-off of a recognizable mainstream property. This time it’s ‘American Warships‘, a film previously known as ‘The American Battleship’ until a lawsuit from Universal triggered a last-minute re-title. As the fine artists and craftsmen at the studio gear up for their next quickie production (after next week’s ‘Abraham Lincoln vs. Zombies‘), we thought that we might use today’s Roundtable to offer up suggestions for their next great “mockbuster.”

Needless to say, it’s a “re-imagining” of a famous existing property made over in the director’s signature visual style and starring Johnny Depp in the lead role. You can complain about that if you must, but this is how Burton likes to work, and it won’t be the last time that he does. Back in 1996, director Scott Hicks burst onto the international cinema scene with his art house hit ‘Shine’, which went on to be nominated for seven Oscars, including Best Picture and Best Director. Today (literally today), Hicks’ latest movie ‘The Lucky One’ is a generic weepy romance starring Zac Efron that was adapted from a Nicholas Sparks book. I guess a fella’s gotta eat.
