Mid-Week Poll: Will You Pay to Stream Movies Early?

Mid-Week Poll: Will You Pay to Stream Movies Early?

In order to bolster its streaming media sales, 20th Century Fox announced late last week a new initiative called “Digital HD,” in which the studio will offer its movies for sale via multiple streaming platforms three weeks ahead of the normal DVD and Blu-ray release dates for the price of $15. The first title to induct the program will be Ridley Scott’s ‘Prometheus’. Does this sound like a good idea to you? Would you pay the $15 to stream a movie early?

Auteur Theory: ‘Twin Peaks’ Pilot Episode

Auteur Theory: ‘Twin Peaks’ Pilot Episode

After the dark and uncompromising vision of ‘Blue Velvet’ saved his career (perhaps just in the nick of time), avant-garde filmmaker David Lynch decided parlay that success by doing the unthinkable: He took a job working for mainstream network television. This was the wisest decision he ever made, and his pilot episode for ‘Twin Peaks’ remains one of the best things he ever directed.

VUDU Diaries: ‘Funny Face’

VUDU Diaries: ‘Funny Face’

‘S wonderful! ‘S marvelous! One of the biggest benefits of a streaming service like VUDU is the surprising wealth of movies available for high-definition viewing that can’t yet be found on Blu-ray, including a great many classic films. Recently, I took advantage of this to take a look at the famed 1957 musical ‘Funny Face’, starring the radiant Ms. Audrey Hepburn and the debonair Mr. Fred Astaire.

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘Suspicion’

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘Suspicion’

In association with the National Film Preservation Foundation, High-Def Digest is proud to join the 2012 Hitchcock Blogathon. During the week of May 14th to 18th, we will blog about topics related to the films and career of the legendary Sir Alfred Hitchcock, with the goal of raising money to fund a new musical score and online streaming distribution for ‘The White Shadow’, an early silent film that young Mr. Hitchcock (then officially a writer and Assistant Director) used as a stepping stone to launch his own directorial career. These Hitchcock posts will run throughout the week, and will involve some special contributors to the blog. I’ll start things off with a look at the filmmaker’s 1941 thriller ‘Suspicion’, starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine.

VUDU Diaries: ‘Horror of Dracula’

VUDU Diaries: ‘Horror of Dracula’

A couple months ago, our special contributor Adam wrote up a review of ‘The Hammer Vault’, a book that details the history of the legendary British movie studio, Hammer Films. Reading that review forced me to admit that I’d never actually seen a film from the studio – well, none of its classics, anyway. (I’d only seen the very recent ‘Let Me In‘.) I decided to rectify that oversight, only to realize that few of the studio’s movies are currently available on Blu-ray. VUDU, however, came to the rescue with one of Hammer’s signature titles, ‘Horror of Dracula’, directed by Terence Fisher and starring the duo of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

Why Walmart’s Disc-to-Digital Program Isn’t Such a Bad Idea

Why Walmart’s Disc-to-Digital Program Isn’t Such a Bad Idea

Recent news of the Walmart-exclusive Disc-to-Digital program, which allows customers to bring a DVD or Blu-ray into a Walmart store in order to receive an internet streaming version of the same movie for a small fee, was met with a lot of scoffing in some home theater circles. Why would someone want to pay again for a movie they already own, right? Especially since internet streaming still can’t match the quality of a good Blu-ray disc. Is there any point to this, other than to clear out some physical disc clutter? Well, it turns out that most of this skepticism is based on misconceptions of what the program really is. I can think of at least one scenario where this could be a really appealing option.

Mid-Week Poll: Movie Watching and Social Networking

Mid-Week Poll: Movie Watching and Social Networking

Today’s poll was inspired by the Prescreen contest we ran last week. Prescreen links a user’s movie-streaming account to his or her Facebook account, in order to make their movie watching habits more of a social networking experience, much as Spotify does for music. I’ve noticed that Netflix and VUDU also have similar features. Do you use them? Do you update Facebook or Twitter when you watch a movie?

New to VUDU: Week of February 5th, 2012

It’s time for some monkey business. This week, VUDU offers up one of last year’s most acclaimed documentaries, which was inexplicably passed over by the Academy Awards and doesn’t seem to be getting a Blu-ray release either.
