Full Metal Jackets: The Truth Is Out There

At this point, the prospects of another ‘X-Files’ movie seem pretty remote. Fans continue to cross their fingers and hope that one day Fox will shell out the money for a full high-definition reconstruction (a la what CBS is doing for ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’) and Blu-ray release of the TV series. Whether that will ever happen is anyone’s guess. In the meantime, we have only the Blu-ray releases of the two feature films to content ourselves with. However much of an intersection there may be between ‘X-Files’ fans and SteelBook collectors, UK retailer Zavvi hopes to serve that niche with a metal case repackaging of the movie double-bill.

Here’s a conundrum for you: If the whole point of SteelBook packaging is to offer fans an aesthetically pleasing collectible to display on their movie shelves, then why, pray tell, would a studio like Universal release a whole wave of Blu-ray SteelBooks with butt-ugly artwork on them? Somebody please explain this to me.

Blu-ray SteelBooks are too often limited edition collectibles. Due to bad timing, I fear that this post should be read for informational purposes only. If you didn’t already place an order for the UK exclusive SteelBook release of Disney’s ‘Aladdin’, you may have missed the too-brief window.

More often than not, SteelBook collectors are forced to import Blu-rays from other countries, frequently at great inconvenience and expense, in order to obtain the shiny metallic goodness they crave. In a welcome change of pace, Quentin Tarantino’s revisionist Western ‘Django Unchained’ will receive the SteelBook treatment later this month, and you’ll be able to buy it right here in the U.S. of A.

When Paramount released a box set for ‘Indiana Jones: The Complete Adventures‘ on Blu-ray last year, a lot of fans were left annoyed at having to buy (or rebuy) the fourth movie in order to get the first three, or possibly even just the first. Many have held out for individual releases of each film. While we continue to wait for an announcement of that in North America, UK retailer Zavvi will finally break out the first three pictures in June of this year, each in its own limited edition Blu-ray SteelBook.

That the first installment in Peter Jackson’s epic ‘Lord of the Rings’ prequel trilogy, ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, would become one of the biggest movies of 2012 was not unexpected at all. The film was virtually preordained to be a blockbuster. Commensurate with its success, the movie will receive not just one, but several SteelBook packaged editions on Blu-ray. Of course, as is so often the case, fans and collectors will need to import them from abroad.

It is a long established fact that ‘Star Wars’ fans will lap up almost any opportunity to rebuy the franchise’s movies every time they’re reissued in new editions. The UK division of Fox Home Entertainment is counting on that by re-releasing the Blu-rays for both trilogies in new SteelBook packaging.

Between exclusives at Best Buy in the United States or Future Shop in Canada, Disney has offered fans a heck of a lot of nice metal case Blu-ray editions of its animated classics, from ‘Snow White’ to the latest Pixar hits. Sadly, the studio skipped a few important titles, including ‘Peter Pan’ just recently, which received no metal packaging options to my knowledge. Fortunately, the upcoming Blu-ray release of the great ‘Who Framed Roger Rabbit’ will indeed get the SteelBook treatment, though you’ll have to import from the UK this time.

Full Metal Jackets: What Does a Pirate Say at a Green Light?

News has been awfully quiet on the SteelBook front lately. Collectors haven’t seen much of note to look forward to beyond that UK import of ‘Skyfall‘ that should be released in the near future. Fortunately, the Future Shop retail chain in Canada has come through with new metal case editions of a couple of this year’s Oscar nominees… if you can get them.

James Bond fans who had collected the original round of Blu-ray SteelBooks for the franchise back in 2008 have been very disappointed that MGM never followed through with releasing the rest of the series in metal packaging. If it’s any small consolation, the latest entry, ‘Skyfall’, will get the SteelBook treatment in the UK.
