At this point, I think that HBO really ought to just give everyone formerly associated with ‘Seinfeld’ his or her own half-hour comedy series. Larry David has been on board for the past decade, and now Julia Louis-Dreyfus joins the network family with the political satire ‘Veep’. Based on the first episode, this one’s another winner.

On Sunday, HBO premiered its new generically-titled, half-hour dramedy series ‘Girls’. The show stars and is written, directed, produced, edited, scored, lit, photographed, sound mixed, catered and pretty much everything else by 25-year-old indie filmmaking sensation Lena Dunham, creator of the audience-polarizing 2010 art film ‘Tiny Furniture‘. Will Dunham’s TV series prove as divisive as her movie, or will it just slink off into obscurity?

With ‘Desperate Housewives’ finally winding down, ABC is already trying to line up a replacement series to fill that empty slot in the “catty rich women stabbing each other in the backs” genre. Or rather, another series to fill that slot. Although ‘Revenge’ still seems to be doing pretty well, the network apparently wanted something a little lighter and funnier to go with it. Thus we have the new Bible Belt satire ‘GCB’, which premiered on Sunday. Is this the second coming of Wisteria Lane?

The TV landscape is so inundated with shows about detectives, that simply being about a detective isn’t enough to capture an audience’s attention anymore. Any new series is therefore forced to put its own unique spin on the genre. Thus, we’ve had shows about detectives who write mystery novels, detectives with OCD, detectives who are also serial killers, time-traveling detectives, detectives who hunt fairy tale monsters, detectives who talk to the dead, detectives who talk to angels, psychic detectives, detectives who pretend to be psychic, detectives who used to pretend to be psychic, etc. and so forth and so on. This past Thursday, NBC premiered the new drama ‘Awake’, about a homicide detective who jumps back and forth between two separate, alternating realities, one in which his wife is alive but his son died, and another where the opposite happened. Can this detective show set itself apart from the pack?

I thought that I’d dislike ‘The River’. I’m only a casual “found footage” genre fan, and I don’t really care for ‘Paranormal Activity‘ or its clones. So, color me surprised when I actually enjoyed the first two episodes of ABC’s new jungle horror show, which was created by ‘Paranormal Activity’ director Oren Peli.
