For its latest half-hour comedy series ‘Family Tree’, the network nabbed mockumentary king Christopher Guest. Based on the first episode, the pairing is a very comfortable fit.

Once a season, author George R.R. Martin writes the screenplay for an episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ himself. You might think that he’d do this to cover some monumental, game-changing event in the story that he felt needed his personal supervision, but that isn’t necessarily the case. It certainly isn’t with this week’s episode, a rather talky affair that, until the end, is conspicuously lacking in either action or high drama.

Well hot damn! For three seasons now, Daenerys Targaryen has felt very remote and disconnected from everything else going on in ‘Game of Thrones’. We’ve known for quite some time that she’ll be an important player in the story at some point, but that point has always felt very far away. This week, her storyline finally kicked into high gear and allowed us to see, for perhaps the first time, just what a threat she truly is.

‘Game of Thrones’ is a show with so many characters and storylines that a one-hour season premiere episode can’t possibly set the stage for all of them. Thus, this week’s second episode felt an awful lot like the second half of the premiere, and spent most of its time filling us in on what everyone else has been up to.

Pretty much simultaneously with Lena Dunham’s big win at the Golden Globes on Sunday, HBO premiered the second season of her much-buzzed dramedy series ‘Girls’. Dunham is a polarizing figure among some viewers, who find her show to be too much narcissistic navel-gazing. If you ask me, the narcissistic navel-gazing is kind of the whole point of the show. I don’t have a problem with it, but nor am I totally enraptured with its supposed brilliance either. Whatever your stance is on ‘Girls’, if you saw any of the first season, the new premiere offers up more of the same.
