Considering how “blah” this weekend’s four new films appeared, it’s no surprise that ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ held onto the #1 box office spot for its second weekend. Neither a preachy women’s tale, a 3D horror flick, a comedic caper nor a 3D concert spin-off of a network TV show could prevent those apes from rising.

Despite the franchise having been absent from the big screen since Tim Burton’s poorly-reviewed ‘Planet of the Apes‘ reboot more than a decade ago, the 43-year-old movie series returned to the big screen with a strong opening weekend. Generously positive reviews and word-of-mouth are to blame for the success of this mediocre prequel about the apes’ origins.

After last week’s record-setting opening, ‘Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2′ dropped more than 71% in attendance. Over the entire weekend, ‘Potter’ barely nabbed $5 million more than what it earned from its initial midnight openings alone. Even so, with another $48 million in its second weekend, the ‘Potter’ finale has now grossed over $274 million domestically and is on track to become the franchise’s biggest winner.
