The Biggest Box Office Bombs of 2011

The Biggest Box Office Bombs of 2011

As the publication does every year, The Hollywood Reporter has made a list of the Top 15 box office bombs of 2011. The definition of “bomb” is based on a comparison of each movie’s budget versus its worldwide box office total. However, as we know, just because a movie didn’t make any money doesn’t mean it was bad. Did all of these movies deserve their sad fate? (Most of them, probably.)

Blu-ray Highlights for 12/20/11 – Time for Last-Minute Shopping

2012 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

2012 Golden Globe Nominations Announced

Yesterday morning, in a presentation hosted by Woody Harrelson, Sofia Vergara, Gerard Butler and Rashida Jones, the Hollywood Foreign Press Association announced its nominees for the upcoming Golden Globe Awards ceremony in January. While a first glance at the list of nominations may not appear to hold many surprises, the biggest surprise (and frankly disappointment) is that there aren’t too many inexplicable or outright bonkers nominations, as the Globes are notorious for, either. Remember how last year ‘The Tourist’ (which is neither a comedy, a musical nor a remotely good movie) was nominated for Best Comedy or Musical? Where’s that kind of insanity this year?

‘American Horror Story’ Pilot Recap: “The World Is a Filthy Place”

‘American Horror Story’ Pilot Recap: “The World Is a Filthy Place”

I’ve got to give Ryan Murphy (creator of ‘Nip/Tuck’ and ‘Glee’) credit where it’s due. The guy may not have yet figured out how to sustain a TV show in the long run (though he’s certainly tried), but he sure knows how to start one off with a bang. The producer’s latest series ‘American Horror Story’ debuted on the FX network last week, and the pilot episode is filled with more balls-out insanity in one hour alone than ten R-rated horror movies slammed together. I can’t believe this thing aired on basic cable. I also have to admit that I kind of loved it.

‘Glee’ 3.01 Recap: “Not Everyone’s Dreams Come True”

‘Glee’ 3.01 Recap: “Not Everyone’s Dreams Come True”

“What if we’re not good enough to make it?,” Kurt asks Rachel about halfway through the third season premiere of ‘Glee’. It’s a moment of self-doubt for the characters, one that they must eventually overcome – but it left me wondering if the show’s writers have asked themselves the same question yet. What if ‘Glee’ isn’t good enough to make it?

2011 Emmy Winners – Same As 2010 Emmy Winners

2011 Emmy Winners – Same As 2010 Emmy Winners

I believe that the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences needs to implement a major overhaul of the Emmy nomination process, such that once a person (in a specific role) or show wins a category, they should be retired from that category going forward. As it stands now, the system is designed to continually issue the same awards to the same winners year after year. That’s exactly what happened in last night’s ceremony, which bestowed its major prizes to the same series that won last year. How boring is that?

Blu-ray Highlights for 9/13/11 – How Broke Are You Going to Be This Week?

Blu-ray Highlights for 9/13/11 – How Broke Are You Going to Be This Week?

Grab something and hold on tight! This week brings us a virtual onslaught of new Blu-ray releases, including two cinematic titans battling it out to pry some of those hard-earned dollars from your wallets. I wish I could say that there was only one difficult choice to make this week, but the reality is that a ton of stuff may deserve your money. Quite frankly, ‘Star Wars’ is the least of them.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Apes’ Need No ‘Help’ in Cheating Box Office Death

Weekend Box Office: ‘Apes’ Need No ‘Help’ in Cheating Box Office Death

Considering how “blah” this weekend’s four new films appeared, it’s no surprise that ‘Rise of the Planet of the Apes’ held onto the #1 box office spot for its second weekend. Neither a preachy women’s tale, a 3D horror flick, a comedic caper nor a 3D concert spin-off of a network TV show could prevent those apes from rising.

Weekend Movies: Four Genres Fight for First

Weekend Movies: Four Genres Fight for First

It’s always fun to watch niche audience flicks open against each other. This weekend ought to be even more fun because we get four different genres: an R-rated crude comedy, a 3D horror splatterfest, a 3D concert movie, and a women-centric drama about equal rights. Which one will come out the winner, no one knows. But last week’s ‘Rise of Planet of the Apes’ will probably put up a strong fight to hold first too.

HD Glee-Cap: “My Manhattan Destiny”

HD Glee-Cap: “My Manhattan Destiny”

After the previous blatant filler episode, I really hoped that the producers of ‘Glee’ were merely saving up their energy to pour everything into the season finale. So, did last week’s big “event” episode deliver the goods? Well… ummm… meh…
