Book Review: ‘Fringe: The Zodiac Paradox’

Book Review: ‘Fringe: The Zodiac Paradox’

After a hundred episodes of ups and downs (more downs than ups in the final season, unfortunately), ‘Fringe’ ended its run on the Fox network earlier this year. However, as with any cult property that still has a fan base, the show’s characters and themes will continue to live on in licensed spin-offs for as long as its rights-holders can continue to squeeze a buck out of them. To that end, author Christa Faust, who has experience with such things (having written books based on the ‘Final Destination’ and ‘Supernatural’ franchises, among others), was commissioned to write a trilogy of ‘Fringe’ prequel novels, all to be published this year. The first, called ‘The Zodiac Paradox’, is available now. If for no other reason than curiosity, I decided to give it a read.

Blu-ray Highlights: Week of May 5th, 2013 – Drinking Blood from a Boot

Blu-ray Highlights: Week of May 5th, 2013 – Drinking Blood from a Boot

This is a pretty good week to be a Tom Cruise fan. The actor’s new sci-fi flick ‘Oblivion’ is still doing well in theaters, and a movie of his from last year (that you probably haven’t seen) hits video on Tuesday. Also new on Blu-ray, we have an interesting assortment of horror, classics, musicals, guilty pleasures, forgotten treasures and existential mystery. Surely, there must be something in here for you?

‘Fringe’ Series Finale Recap: “Destiny Can Be Changed”

‘Fringe’ Series Finale Recap: “Destiny Can Be Changed”

The end is here. After five years of ups and downs (more downs than ups recently, unfortunately), ‘Fringe’ aired its two-part series finale on Friday. For as negatively as I’ve felt about the show this season, I’m surprised to admit that the finale actually ties a lot of things together. But does it bring the series to a fully satisfying conclusion? That much is still up for debate.

‘Fringe’ 5.10 Recap: “In Reality, You’re the Animal”

‘Fringe’ 5.10 Recap: “In Reality, You’re the Animal”

Maybe I’m just too jaded, but I have a hard time getting choked up when a major character is killed off on ‘Fringe’. The show has a long history of unwriting and retconning character deaths. Given the way that I fully expect the series finale to end in a few weeks, I don’t consider anything in the current storyline to be permanent.

‘Fringe’ 5.09 Recap: And Now for Something Completely Different…

‘Fringe’ 5.09 Recap: And Now for Something Completely Different…

You know how, at least once per season, ‘Fringe’ tries to do something totally wacky and experimental in an episode, seemingly from out of the blue? I’m talking about stuff like that musical episode in Season 2, or that animated ep in Season 3. Well, the show pulled that trick again last week with a pretty peculiar sequence stuck in the middle of what is otherwise another run-of-the-mill episode.

‘Fringe’ 5.08 Recap: “Emotion Is Our Weakness”

‘Fringe’ 5.08 Recap: “Emotion Is Our Weakness”

‘Fringe’ took a break for a couple weeks and, quite frankly, I forgot all about it until my DVR picked up a new episode on Friday. I’ve followed this show for five years, and have resolved to see it through to the end, yet I can’t be bothered to care whether new episodes air or not. Are other fans as disappointed by the final season as I am, or am I alone in this?

‘Fringe’ 5.07 Recap: “The World’s Not Going to Save Itself”

‘Fringe’ 5.07 Recap: “The World’s Not Going to Save Itself”

In the most recent episode of ‘Fringe’, Peter continues his evolution into one of the Observers that he hates so much. Also, we get an explanation for the handprint symbol that occasionally appears in the show’s commercial bumpers, but wasn’t featured the previous week when the other symbols were allegedly explained. Unlike the others, this one actually seems relevant and makes a little bit of sense.

‘Fringe’ 5.06 Recap: “Things Work Differently Here”

‘Fringe’ 5.06 Recap: “Things Work Differently Here”

Friday’s episode of ‘Fringe’ attempted to finally work in an explanation for those strange symbols that appear during the show’s commercial bumpers, as if their meaning and this storyline had been planned all along since the beginning. I don’t think I buy it. Do you?

‘Fringe’ 5.05 Recap: “You Don’t Even Know What You Don’t Know”

‘Fringe’ 5.05 Recap: “You Don’t Even Know What You Don’t Know”

In last Friday’s episode of ‘Fringe’, Peter channeled his inner Jack Bauer for a little payback on the bastards who murdered his daughter. You know, maybe this is just me, but even after watching him for five years in this character, I still have trouble buying Pacey from ‘Dawson’s Creek’ as a badass.

‘Fringe’ 5.04 Recap: “We Beat Them, One by One”

‘Fringe’ 5.04 Recap: “We Beat Them, One by One”

Have I complained enough about the current season of ‘Fringe’? OK, fine. As much as I dislike the year’s storyline, even I have to admit when the show gives us a good episode, as was the case this past Friday.
