‘Fringe’ 4.22 Recap: “What a Troublesome Species We Can Be”

‘Fringe’ 4.22 Recap: “What a Troublesome Species We Can Be”

One consequence of my traveling last week is that I’m way behind on my TV watching. In fact, my DVR overran while I was away and deleted some of my oldest recordings. (Guess I’ll never find out what happened in the last half-season of ‘Revenge’ now. Oh well…) Now that I’m back, it’s time to do some catching up. We’ll start today with the season finale (which was very nearly the series finale) of ‘Fringe’.

‘Fringe’ 4.21 Recap: “The Bishop Must Be Sacrificed”

‘Fringe’ 4.21 Recap: “The Bishop Must Be Sacrificed”

‘Fringe’ aired the first half of its two-part season finale on Friday. Admittedly, it’s probably not fair for me to judge the episode until I can see how all of its plot points play out in the second part. However, at this moment, it sure feels like a gigantic, unwieldy mess, and perhaps one of the most frustrating episodes that the show has ever aired. Considering that this is ‘Fringe’ we’re talking about, that’s saying a lot.

‘Fringe’ 4.20 Recap: “Reverse Impact”

‘Fringe’ 4.20 Recap: “Reverse Impact”

Looks like I was right on the money about that flash-forward episode of ‘Fringe’ having basically no significance to anything. This past Friday’s new episode ignored it completely and got back on track to moving forward with the actual storyline of the season. That’s fine by me.

‘Fringe’ 4.19 Recap: “You Are Always Exactly What You Seem”

‘Fringe’ 4.19 Recap: “You Are Always Exactly What You Seem”

As if ‘Fringe’ wasn’t already crazy enough on a weekly basis, once or twice a season the show tries to pull out all the stops to drop a major mind-screw on the audience. Sometimes, these have lasting repercussions for the series’ narrative (like the first visit to the alternate universe in the Season 1 finale), while other times these bizarre tangents don’t lead anywhere (like Season 2′s musical or last year’s animated episode). Unfortunately, Friday’s totally out-there episode feels like one of the latter.

‘Fringe’ 4.18 Recap: “Things Are Going to Get Much Worse”

‘Fringe’ 4.18 Recap: “Things Are Going to Get Much Worse”

What exactly is the evil David Robert Jones up to on ‘Fringe’ this season? Friday’s episode may finally give us some insight into his plans.

‘Fringe’ 4.17 Recap: “Nothing Says Badass Like a Flying Rat”

‘Fringe’ 4.17 Recap: “Nothing Says Badass Like a Flying Rat”

I like that ‘Fringe’ has given extra attention to some of the show’s supporting characters this season, such as the episode that focused on Astrid not too long ago. Friday’s new episode put the spotlight on Lincoln Lee, and it’s another strong character piece.

‘Fringe’ 4.16 Recap: “We Can Be the Children of the New World”

‘Fringe’ 4.16 Recap: “We Can Be the Children of the New World”

As anyone who read my last recap noticed, I wasn’t enamored with the previous episode of ‘Fringe’. Fortunately, the show bounced back a bit on Friday with a new episode that revisits an old case.

‘Fringe’ 4.15 Recap: “We’re Not Meant to Be Alone”

‘Fringe’ 4.15 Recap: “We’re Not Meant to Be Alone”

Every time ‘Fringe’ takes a break from the broadcast schedule, I worry that it won’t come back. Every time it does feels like a pleasant surprise. Despite the show’s ever-dwindling ratings, Fox seems committed to letting it play out at least the current season. After a few weeks off, the series returned on Friday. It’s just nice to be back in the company of these characters, even if this particular episode isn’t one of the season’s best.

‘Fringe’ 4.14 Recap: “We Are You”

‘Fringe’ 4.14 Recap: “We Are You”

The bald-headed, fedora-wearing Observers have been one of the longstanding unresolved mysteries on ‘Fringe’. We know little bits and pieces about them (they exist outside of linear time, and appear during significant events in human history), but who are they, really? The promo ads for Friday’s episode promised answers to this question. Did it deliver, or was this just a big tease?

‘Fringe’ 4.13 Recap: “The Hubris of Trying to Improve Upon God”

‘Fringe’ 4.13 Recap: “The Hubris of Trying to Improve Upon God”

I don’t typically pay much attention to TV ratings. That’s something for network execs to stress about, not me. However, when shows that I like are on the so-called “bubble” for renewal, it’s worth checking in every once in a while to see how well or badly they’re doing. Unfortunately, ‘Fringe’ is doing very badly this season, even compared to last season, which wasn’t so hot to begin with. The situation looks pretty dire. Although Fox will let the show play out to the end of this current season, another renewal after that seems unlikely. Of course, I said that last year too, so who can predict what will really happen? In the meantime, Friday brought a new episode that both gave us a case-of-the-week and moved the ongoing storyline forward.
