We went negative with last week’s Roundtable topic about worst movie endings. This week, let’s turn that around to talk about movies that had truly great opening scenes that really grabbed us right from the start.
After a slow start, the year’s Blu-ray release schedule finally heats up this week. Even if you don’t find the new day-and-date releases too exciting, the studios are unleashing a flood of great catalog titles to keep you busy.
This week’s Roundtable spun out of last week’s topic. Specifically, it was prompted by a comment from reader Brian H, who suggested that we should put together our own list of 100 films that didn’t make the AFI Top 100 Movies list. I don’t know that we have the wherewithal to do a hundred titles all on our own, but perhaps we can get the ball rolling. We’ll give you our picks for movies that the AFI inexplicably ignored, and you can fill in the rest. Let’s see how far we get.
It’s confession time once again in the Roundtable. If you’re a reasonably film literate person, you’ve no doubt seen countless movies over the course of your lifetime. Nonetheless, it simply isn’t possible to see every movie you want. You’re bound to have missed some classic or supposedly “important” film along the way that it may seem like everyone else has seen, or expects you to have seen. So, fill us in. Where are the gaps in your film knowledge?
We may like to gripe around here about all the mistakes that the Academy Awards have made over the years, but we also have to acknowledge that, every once in a while, Oscar gets something right too. For this week’s Roundtable, we’re going to try a little positivity. Here’s our look at some Academy Award winners that actually deserved their acclaim.
