After the complete disaster that was this past Sunday’s Academy Awards telecast, it’s clear that the Academy needs to take major steps to revamp the ceremony. It can no longer fall back on dragging Billy Crystal out of retirement when other plans fall through. His hosting this year was simply dreadful. With that in mind, let’s use today’s Roundtable to offer our suggestions for people who might make better hosts next year.

It’s a wonder why we subject ourselves to the Oscars year after year. I guess that somewhere, deep down inside, I hope that the show will get better. But then I hear those ominous words, “Billy Crystal is hosting for the eighteenth time,” and I cringe. Amidst all the hubbub about the Academy Awards, you might be forgiven for forgetting that the Independent Spirit Awards also took place over the weekend. Certainly, Hollywood seems to have forgotten about them. Once a hipper, edgier alternative to the Oscars, one designed to reward the smaller films that Oscar ignored, the Spirit Awards ceremony has lately degenerated into an inconsequential also-ran event that celebrates a lot of the same movies that Oscar does. That was definitely the case this year.
