SteelBook Alert: The One Who Knocks

As the home video studios focus their efforts on DVD and digital streaming, TV content on Blu-ray is getting to be rare enough in itself these days. For a TV show to get collectible SteelBook releases, it has to be a property with a considerable following. UK retailer Zavvi is counting on fans of ‘Breaking Bad’ to scoop up a set of new SteelBooks with an unconventional design theme.

The caricature portraits on these season sets were drawn by cartoonist Ralph Steadman, who’s famous for illustrating several Hunter S. Thompson novels and creating the iconic artwork for ‘Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas’. Personally I’m not sure that the style fits all that well with ‘Breaking Bad’. I mean, yes, the show is at least ostensibly about drugs, but it’s more about the people who make the drugs than the users who take them. It doesn’t spend a lot of time depicting the surreal hallucinations of characters tripping balls the way that Thompson’s novels did.

In any case, these SteelBooks are at least an interesting idea and are certainly unique enough. They might appeal to some fans more than they appeal to me.

These are ugly as hell. Somebody fire Ralph Steadman. I would personally go out of my way to not purchase these as opposed to going to the trouble of importing them.

  2. Yeah, just another f’ugly cover scheme. I watched the show *some* and honestly speaking, these covers affect me in a negative way. If I was at the maybe point for buying this show on blu ray, a standard or jazzed up cover might be enough to have me buy the steelbook, but these, hell no!
Although region coding is not confirmed, them being Sony Releases, and previous UK releases of this show were in fact region free, the odds are favoring them being region free.
