Captain’s Blog: They’ve Adapted!

Mark your calendars: The acclaimed ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ two-part episode ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ will be assimilated into theaters for a special one-night event at specified locations around the country on April 25th. Resistance is futile.

The details from the press release are as follows:

Fathom Events and CBS Home Entertainment are coming together again to celebrate the iconic series Star Trek: The Next Generation® with a special one night big screen event — “Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Best of Both Worlds” on Thurs., April 25 at 7:00 PM (local time) in select cinemas nationwide.

Fans will enjoy this digitally restored and gloriously remastered presentation in high definition. The fascinating storyline follows the cybernetic alien race, the Borg, as they abduct and transform Capt. Picard into a half-Borg, half-human called Locutus. Meanwhile, the Enterprise crew must race against time to intercept the nefarious Borg cube before it reaches Earth to enslave humanity.

“Fans have been discussing these historic episodes since they first aired, and we’re excited to present them like never before, newly improved and on the big screen,” said Ken Ross, executive vice president and general manager of CBS Home Entertainment. “This special event will ensure that The Best of Both Worlds will remain a classic throughout the 21st Century — and beyond.”

“After the success of the first two Star Trek: The Next Generation events, we couldn’t wait to bring additional seasons back to the big screen for fans to enjoy,” said Shelly Maxwell, executive vice president of NCM Fathom Events. “Fans will be absolutely thrilled with the presentation of these ‘Next Generation’ classics.”

The Next Generation, created by Gene Roddenberry, became the longest running series of the Star Trek franchise, consisting of 178 episodes over 7 seasons. “Star Trek: The Next Generation – The Best of Both Worlds” is the first opportunity to see the third season finale and the fourth season premiere as a gloriously remastered full-length feature. Additionally, fans will be treated to special clips from “Regeneration: Engaging the Borg,” a behind-the-scenes look at the making of “The Best of Both Worlds.”

Here is a full list of participating theaters. (Theaters and participants subject to change.) Tickets for the event are available now at participating theater box offices and online at FathomEvents.com.

  1. I’m really excited about this! I have the disc preordered along with Season 3, but still, I really want to go to this. A few months ago, Fathom Events was doing a few epsisodes of Season 1, but I missed that with some previous engagement.

  2. I have never seen The Next Generation. Why is ‘The Best of Both Worlds’ such a special episode? Is it extra good? Excellent performances? Classy script?

And William, why did you pre-order both Season 3 and ‘Best of Both Worlds’? Won’t the two-part episode be included in the box set of Season 3?

    • Best of Both Worlds was a 2-parter that comprised the final episode of Season 3 and the first episode of Season 4. So, the S3 box set will only contain the first half. If someone is impatient to watch the whole thing, they’d probably want to pick up the standalone copy.

As to why it’s so important, it probably helps to watch the episodes in context of the seasons, but it was a hugely dramatic story arc with a lot of action and epic scope that raised the stakes for the characters. It’s basically a little movie in the middle of the TV show. It’s probably better than any of the four actual movies the TNG crew made. Though, again, it may not have the same impact if it’s your first exposure to TNG without three seasons of build-up.

The Best Of Both Worlds has been recut for the theatrical release, and is being released in 16×9. So while it’s the same story, it will be a bit different than the episode.
