Weekend Roundtable: Your 2012 in Movie Titles

This week’s Roundtable continues our look back at 2012. We have a fun little game for you this time. If you had to describe how your year went using only movie titles (from any year), what would you choose? Once you read some of our entries, I think you’ll get the idea.

I didn’t require our staff to provide explanations for the titles they selected, but some did anyway. Others should be pretty self-explanatory just by reading the titles. I’ll start with those.

Mike Attebery

‘Hanky Panky’
‘She’s Having a Baby’
‘Nine Months’
‘The Long, Hot Summer’
‘Baby Boom’
‘Parenthood’
‘Mr. Mom’

Aaron Peck

‘Mr. Mom’
‘Look Who’s Talking’
‘Adaptation’
‘Trading Places’
‘Back to School’
‘Contagion’

Daniel Hirshleifer

‘Back To School’
‘An Unexpected Journey’
‘Planet of the Apes’

Adam Tyner (DVDTalk)

‘She’s All That’
‘Wedding Daze’
‘Boat Trip’
‘All the Pretty Horses’
‘Theremin: An Electronic Odyssey’

Decoded: I met an unbelievably amazing girl. I flew all over the country and eventually into Canada for a slew of different weddings. I went on my first cruise. I went horseback riding in Mexico. I bought a theremin, because… well, of course I did.

Brian Hoss

‘This Is 40’

Restricting my choices to movies from 2012, I have to go with ‘This Is 40’. Granted, I’m not yet approaching 40, but at some point in 2012, I decided not to wait until I am 40 to indulge in a mid-life crisis. The upswing of this decision mainly resulted in a regular involvement in physical recreation and some harmless carousing. All in all, I went from being a bit narcissistic about my age to relatively fancy-free, from which I derived considerable enjoyment and well-being despite the aforementioned crisis-related ridicule.

Tom Landy

‘Road Trip’
‘Star Trek: First Contact’
‘Die Another Day’
‘Stir Crazy’

When I heard that the entire principle cast of ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ was coming together at the Calgary Expo in April, I couldn’t resist the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to drive down and attend this 25th anniversary reunion. I was also able to meet the nine main bridge crew members in person, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard himself, Sir Patrick Stewart. For the most part, it was a fantastic experience. Technically, I guess it was second contact with Jonathan Frakes and Michael Dorn (since I met them a few months earlier).

However, my vacation was abruptly cut short. On the Sunday morning, instead of leaving my hotel for the third and final day of the convention, I was rushed by ambulance to the hospital where I spent about a week in intensive care. It’s a long story that I’d rather forget, so let’s just skip to the end and say that I survived my ordeal.

Finally, like Josh, my family was also planning to move at the end of 2012. Unfortunately though, problem after problem arose and we are still waiting for everything to be finished so we can finally move into the new place. Since we were supposed to be in at the end of October, needless to say, being stuck in limbo for this long is taking its toll on my sanity.

Josh Zyber

‘Thinner’
‘Sudden Death’
‘Misery’
‘Dream House’
‘The Money Pit’
‘High Anxiety’

Translation: I had a rollercoaster of a year. Things started on an up note after I resolved to stop being such a fat slob and get in shape. Over the first few months of the year, I dropped 50 pounds, and have (mostly) successfully kept that off. Unfortunately, the unexpected death of our favorite pet and some other personal losses left Mrs. Z and I in a pretty bad funk mid-year. Things picked up again when we decided to finally get out of our apartment and buy a house. But, as I’ve been detailing in other recent posts, that has turned into a hugely expensive and stressful project.

2013 has already had a shaky start (‘Outbreak’ would be the title of choice), but we’re still hopeful that this year will be better once flu season ends and our home renovation is complete.

Now it’s your turn to have some fun with this in the Comments. What movie titles best describe the year you had?

    • Most of my friends are getting married and having kids. we have actually been engaged longer than all of them but decided it was more important to surgically make sure we don’t have any damn kids than actually get married. And my Grandma died… She was the Matriarch and it pretty well ****ed the rest of the family. My Mom (other side of the family) was drowning in prescriptions and couldn’t leave her bed, being given terrible advice and drugs by doctors she trusted. My Grandpa (the widower on the other side) is dealing with steadily increasing Alzheimers. My business was failing until a customer/friend decided to make a big thing of it, and reminded us why we do what we do. Business has since been fantastic. And my fiance bought a juicer and we’re eating mostly raw foods.

    Dredd

    The Grey

Translation: Got in shape, which entailed dieting. Met someone with whom I was infatuated and then terribly disenchanted. Had the desire to travel, and so I did. I got a big lucky break and got a job far away. Wrote a very terrible novel in three days. Dreaded the prospect of uprooting, but I braved it. My parting was almost entirely unnoticed by my coworkers. I got on a plane and was gone to a place where, so far, sunny days are once a week, if that. All 2012 titles too.

  3. Drive-Did quite a bit of traveling this year. Nowhere farther than a state away, mostly to see my parents every couple of months.
    A Separation-My parents got a divorce.
The Sting-My parents announced they were getting a divorce mere weeks before I was getting married
The Apartment-My mom is now living in an apartment that we now stay at whenever we are visiting.
Super 8-I got married in August.
Kiss Kiss Bang Bang-I am in a very happy marriage.
    It’s A Wonderful Life

  4. Office Space
    There’s Something About Mary
    Joyful Noise
    Mr. Mom
Daddy Day Care (unemployed earlier in the year, so got roped into watching friends’ kids some)
The Odd Couple (few months with a roommate)
    Contagion
    Scrooge
    The Grinch
