Hitchcock Blogathon: The ‘Vertigo’ Walking Tour

Hitchcock Blogathon: The ‘Vertigo’ Walking Tour

In a fortuitous bit of timing, this Hitchcock Blogathon happens to be running the same week that I’ve been attending a conference in San Francisco, which was of course the setting of one of Alfred Hitchcock’s most famous films. In fact, I’ve been staying in a hotel seen in the movie. Since I had a free day before the conference to tool around town a bit, I decided to visit a few of the locations immortalized in ‘Vertigo’.

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘The Wrong Man’

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘The Wrong Man’

When one thinks of Alfred Hitchcock films, the preface “Based on a true story” doesn’t usually jump to mind. Yet that’s exactly what ‘The Wrong Man’ is. Adapted from a real life case of mistaken identity, the movie reportedly stays remarkably close to the actual events that inspired it. In many ways unique among the director’s vast canon of spine-tingling thrillers, the film retains a rare sense of realism for the Master of Suspense, which results in a picture that’s both atypically and classically Hitchcock.

Blu-ray Highlights for May 15th, 2012 – Malkovich Malkovich MALKOVICH!!!

In case you hadn’t noticed (though I’ve certainly complained about it enough), it’s been a pretty dry Blu-ray season over the past several weeks. Fortunately, things at least marginally pick up today with the release of a few rental-worthy new titles, one cult classic, and even some noteworthy budget discs.

TV Madness: Westen vs. Buffy

We’ve come down to the final 16 characters in TV Madness. It’s been a long, hard battle for most of these combatants. Some surprises have emerged – like Sylar defeating Captain Kirk by two votes. Today, we start off the round of 16 by pitting Buffy Summers against Michael Westen.

Hitchcock Blogathon: The Hitchcock Blondes

Hitchcock Blogathon: The Hitchcock Blondes

Cool. Aloof. Clever. Calculating. Alluring. Mysterious. Sexy. In essence, that’s the Hitchcock Blonde, a creature indigenous and essential to some of the greatest films that the Master of Suspense ever made. Though the faces, names and hairstyles often change from picture to picture, the archetype remains largely the same, and contributes a unique and intoxicating flavor to many Hitchcock films.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Avengers’ Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

Weekend Box Office: ‘Avengers’ Crosses $1 Billion Worldwide

Unsurprisingly, Tim Burton’s latest joint venture with Johnny Depp was shadowed by the continued record-breaking success of ‘The Avengers’. Earning another $103 million domestically, Marvel’s superhero epic crossed the worldwide $1 billion mark this weekend. That second-weekend total crushed the previous second-weekend record held by the $75.6 million of ‘Avatar‘. Box Office Mojo also notes that ‘The Avengers’ broke other records, including fastest movie to $300 million and $350 million, and the highest eight-day, nine-day and ten-day grosses.

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘Suspicion’

Hitchcock Blogathon: ‘Suspicion’

In association with the National Film Preservation Foundation, High-Def Digest is proud to join the 2012 Hitchcock Blogathon. During the week of May 14th to 18th, we will blog about topics related to the films and career of the legendary Sir Alfred Hitchcock, with the goal of raising money to fund a new musical score and online streaming distribution for ‘The White Shadow’, an early silent film that young Mr. Hitchcock (then officially a writer and Assistant Director) used as a stepping stone to launch his own directorial career. These Hitchcock posts will run throughout the week, and will involve some special contributors to the blog. I’ll start things off with a look at the filmmaker’s 1941 thriller ‘Suspicion’, starring Cary Grant and Joan Fontaine.

Weekend Roundtable: Burtonize This!

Weekend Roundtable: Burtonize This!

Tim Burton has a new movie in theaters today. Needless to say, it’s a “re-imagining” of a famous existing property made over in the director’s signature visual style and starring Johnny Depp in the lead role. You can complain about that if you must, but this is how Burton likes to work, and it won’t be the last time that he does. While we wait for the inevitable announcement of which old movie, TV show or work of classic literature that the Burton-Depp combo will tackle next, we thought that we might toss some suggestions their way in this week’s Roundtable.
