Book Review: ‘Peter Cushing: A Life in Film’

Book Review: ‘Peter Cushing: A Life in Film’

May 26th marks what would’ve been the hundredth birthday of Peter Cushing, and the prolific British actor left behind a sprawling filmography for his many admirers to rediscover. A number of Cushing’s most iconic horror films have found their way onto Blu-ray overseas, among them ‘Dracula’ and ‘The Curse of Frankenstein’. As I write this, ‘The Vampire Lovers’, ‘The Brides of Dracula’, and the Dalek double feature of ‘Invasion Earth 2150′ and ‘Dr. Who and the Daleks’ are weeks away from debuting on Blu-ray on one side of the pond or the other. Be it his coldly malevolent turn as Grand Moff Tarkin in ‘Star Wars’ or his countless Gothic horror films, there’s no shortage of ways to honor the life and work of Peter Cushing on the year of his centennial. Rather than stop at merely watching some of the actor’s most beloved movies, author David Miller instead celebrates with the release of his book ‘Peter Cushing: A Life in Film’.

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.03 Recap: “There’s No Sun in Your World”

‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ 1.03 Recap: “There’s No Sun in Your World”

After a particularly strong second episode, ‘Da Vinci’s Demons’ dives back into mediocrity with a rather standard third installment. Entitled ‘The Prisoner’, Episode 3 proves to be a by-the-numbers affair that doesn’t do a whole lot to advance the ongoing storylines.

‘Game of Thrones’ 3.05 Recap: “By What Right Does the Wolf Judge the Lion?”

While this week’s new episode of ‘Game of Thrones’ may not have the sort of spectacular, epic climax like we saw the previous week, it’s chock full of important story points that are well balanced by some great character moments.

‘Community’ 4.11 Recap: “And That Is What I Would Be Saying If I Gave a Crap”

‘Community’ 4.11 Recap: “And That Is What I Would Be Saying If I Gave a Crap”

I know that I may sound like a broken record at this point, but this season of ‘Community’ has consistently been at its best when it keeps things focused on the group and keeps the group at Greendale. This was perfectly displayed in last Thursday’s episode, ‘Basic Human Anatomy’. Not only was it one of the funniest episodes of the season, but it was the one that felt the most like it could have come from the Dan Harmon era.

Videogame Releases: Week of April 28th, 2013

If you love even one single thing from the 1980s, then you owe it to yourself to check out ‘FarCry 3: Blood Dragon’. That, along with what has to be the most anticipated PS Vita game by far, means that this week is stacked with misfit videogames not to be missed.

Go a Little Crazy – Win ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ on Blu-ray!

Go a Little Crazy – Win ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ on Blu-ray!

We were all set to give away another, slightly older Blu-ray today when word came in late last night that we have a spare copy of this year’s Best Picture nominee ‘Silver Linings Playbook’ available for a contest prize. Since this seemed a little more timely and relevant, I decided to do a last-minute substitution and offer this one up for grabs instead. If there’s any interest in a ‘Gangster Squad’ contest, let me know and I may run that at a later date. In the meantime, don’t miss your chance to take home Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence in all their high-def glory.

‘Hannibal’ 1.05 Recap: “This Is My Gift to You”

‘Hannibal’ 1.05 Recap: “This Is My Gift to You”

As I mentioned in my last recap, NBC pulled the fourth episode of ‘Hannibal’ from the planned broadcast schedule, allegedly out of “sensitivity” to the victims of the real-life Boston Marathon bombing, and skipped right to Episode 5 instead. The decision doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. As far as I’m aware, the storyline didn’t have anything to do with a bombing, and the new episode still features plenty of graphic violence. Disrupting the show’s continuity only serves to confuse fans who’ve followed it thus far.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Pain’ Gains an Audience

Weekend Box Office: ‘Pain’ Gains an Audience

Michael Bay’s weekend win would typically be big news, but this one is overshadowed by the international debut of ‘Iron Man 3′. The third movie in Marvel’s franchise (fourth if you count ‘The Avengers‘) opened in 42 markets one week prior to its U.S. release and earned $195.3 million, which is $10 million more than the international opening for ‘Avengers’. Michael Bay may have won the domestic battle this weekend, but next week ‘Iron Man’ will bring the pain. Continue Reading

Blu-ray Highlights: Week of April 28th, 2013 – You Have Poor Social Skills

As we close out the month of April, eight of this year’s nine Best Picture Academy Award nominees are now available on Blu-ray. (The only film still missing is Michael Haneke’s ‘Amour’.) This week also brings us several movies that were less than Oscar worthy. Will you buy any of them?

Weekend Roundtable: Second Chances

Weekend Roundtable: Second Chances

Sometimes, we just can’t properly appreciate a movie on first viewing. Perhaps the marketing misled us into expecting something entirely different than what we’d actually get, perhaps we set impossibly high expectations that no movie could possibly meet, or perhaps we were just in a bad mood the day we first saw it. Whatever the reason, some films require a second (or sometimes third or even more) viewing before we can recognize their best qualities. In this week’s Roundtable, we revisit some of the movies that we just didn’t “get” the first time around.
