HDD Exclusive Netflix Stream: Week of June 12th, 2011

Netflix gives us a pretty fair shake this week. We lose a few classics, but in return get some great movies and TV shows from the last year or so. That’s not a bad trade.

Leaving the Stream
  1. ‘Kelly’s Heroes’ (6/21): This is one of those movies that I remember watching with my dad back when I was a kid. ‘Kelly’s Heroes‘ is sort of a send-up of war movies that take themselves just a bit too seriously. Clint Eastwood may be the first name on the marquee, but Donald Sutherland steals the show.
  2. ‘Starship Troopers’ (6/21): Full disclosure: I hate ‘Starship Troopers‘.I think it’s dull and crass and heavy-handed. I’m told that I “don’t get it” and that it’s a brilliant movie, so I thought it was important to mention that it’s going to be off the stream starting next week. (Read Blu-ray review.)
Entering the Stream
  1. ‘The Social Network’ (6/20): There were scant few who didn’t praise this movie when it was released last year. ‘The Social Network‘ is like a ‘Pirates of Silicon Valley’ for a whole new generation, with a bigger budget and far more praise. It’s full of drama and intrigue and all sorts of other exciting things, like fast, clipped dialogue from Jesse Eisenberg. If you haven’t seen it, now’s the time. (Read Blu-ray review.)
  2. ‘Louie’ (6/21): This is an incredibly unconventional show, but ‘Louie‘ is one of the most interesting and entertaining things to hit TV in some time. It’s also flat-out daring in some cases, especially in terms of its brutal honesty and willingness to deal with difficult situations over the backdrop of comedy. Give it an episode or two. You might learn to love it.

  1. I wouldn’t say “you don’t get it”. Starship Troopers is one of those movies that just kind of takes you for a ride, and you are either on board or you get left behind. There really is no middle ground in the movie. And quite frankly, if I am being honest, its not that good of a story either – its rather simple, and the characters are extreamely flat. But that’s okay, the movie is really not about the characters, you just kind of are with them for the ride.

That said, no biggie for me that its leaving – I picked it up about a month ago for $6 on Blu-Ray

  2. I think I’m probably one of the people who told Dick that he doesn’t get it and that Starship Troopers is a brilliant satire of action movies, sci-fi, and the ridiculous political sermonizing that was the sole purpose of the original novel. 🙂

  3. Louie is one of the funniest shows to ever be on TV. Louis C.K is by far the funniest comedian is show-business today. I wish HBO would have let Lucky Louie go on for a few more seasons. No show on TV has made me laugh as much as that show did.

Apparently Sony and Starz have some sort of beef over Netflix, so Social Network, among others, has been pulled already.
