The Netflix Stream: Week of January 15th, 2012

There’s not a lot of movement in the Netflix stream this week. While we gain practically nothing, we also only lose two movies worth talking about. Wouldn’t it be nice if this happened more often? It’d sure give us less reason to babysit our queues!

Leaving the Stream
  1. ‘Slacker’ (1/21): I watched ‘Slacker‘ and I just didn’t care for it. The movie has been called out by many as a classic and a must watch, so I’ll let one of them say something instead. “Watching ‘Slacker’ is like drifting in and out of all the best conversations at a party,” says my dear friend Molly Laich, who generally knows a thing or two about movies. She’s wrong on ‘Jumanji’, though. ‘Jumanji ‘is great.
  2. ‘Dead Calm’ (1/24): The plot is neat: A couple find themselves on a boat with a psychopath. But ‘Dead Calm‘ is one of those movies that I’d watch just for the cast. I find Nicole Kidman to be a fine actress and Sam Neill is, of course, excellent. Billy Zane doesn’t always pick the best movies, but he did a boat movie in 1997 that turned out pretty well, so I’d be happy to see him on one again.

  1. ‘Sliders’: I have no idea if ‘Sliders‘ holds up or not, but I’m so very willing to give it a try. If you never saw the show, imagine a sort of ‘Doctor Who’ meets ‘Quantum Leap’, but with Jerry O’Connell and John Rhys-Davies. Bits of Season 1 are unavailable, but Seasons 2 through 5 are complete. Also, maybe it’s just me, but my memory is hazy about TV shows and movies from when I was young. I remember a lot of the cast wrong. So for some reason, up until a year or two ago, I thought that Michael Ian Black starred in this show. I can’t say it would have been better if he had, but it sure would have been funnier!

Sliders was a great show, or was until Season 4/5.

Season one only had 7 or 8 episodes in it to begin with.

Season 1 & 2 were the best of the series with the four regulars, O’Connell and Rhys-Davies’ relationship was the most interesting part of the show.

Halfway through Season 3 with its first major cast change, the show was still pretty good but started to lose some of its luster.

When the next major cast member left before Season 4, the show took a turn in a new direction which wasn’t the most interesting. Even though Kari Wuhrer was still very hot!

Season 5 is very mixed bag. There are some good episodes, sadly most of that season was weak.

Roger Daltry also makes an appearance in the show as does Neil Dickson (She-Wolf of London) who takes over the Daltry role as a recurring character.

  2. Long Time Sliders Fan

I’ve always been a huge fan of the Sliders tv show. So when Netflix started providing the majority of the episodes through their streaming video service. I was truly excited. I quickly added the each season to my watching instantly queue and have enjoyed watching the seasons every since. At first each season was a different entry in the queue but recently the seasons have been combined into just one entry. My memory fails me to when the seasons initially became available but it has been at lest two years, probably longer. Some time last week, I noticed the new episode banner splashed across the bottom of the Sliders entry. I began to think they have finally added the three excluded episodes. To my surprise Season two had been eliminated. There are a total of 88 Sliders episodes and Netflix was providing 85 of them. Now there are only 72.

I guess this is another case of of the golden rule, he who has the gold makes the rule.
