The Netflix Stream: Week of December 4th, 2011

To quote the late, great Stone Cold Steve Austin: “Oh hell yeah!” We lose nothing from the Netflix stream this week. Well, to be entirely accurate, we lose a dozen movies that aren’t worth mentioning, unless you really want to see the sequel to that ABC Family Christmas movie that stars Jenny McCarthy as Santa’s daughter. You don’t. Also, I’m aware that Stone Cold isn’t dead, but I really like the way “late, great” sounds in that first sentence, so it stays as is.

Entering the Stream
  1. ‘Spaced’: Edgar Wright directs and Simon Pegg writes. It worked for ‘Hot Fuzz’, it worked for ‘Shaun of the Dead’ and it works in ‘Spaced‘. The first episode may start a bit slowly, but the series picks up quickly from there. If you dig the Frost and Pegg combo, this will fit the bill quite nicely. Not to be skipped over, Jessica Hynes is the co-star and the other credited writer of the show, and she brings plenty of humor while keeping things grounded in a bit of reality.
  2. ‘The Nutty Professor’: “Oh, that one movie where Eddie Murphy plays a whole fat family?” No. Not at all. This is the good stuff. In 1963, Jerry Lewis made comedy that still holds up today. Say what you will about his later years and his stance on female comedians, ‘The Nutty Professor‘ is damn good.
  3. ‘Emmet Otter’s Jug-Band Christmas’: This is a favorite of one of my dear friends. On Christmas, he’d pull out the old VHS tape that he had recorded ‘Emmet Otter‘ on and we’d pop it in to watch the slightly warped video all the way through. Netflix may not have 1080p 7.1 surround streaming, but boy does it beat a janked-up old tape from the early ’80s.
  4. ‘GoldenEye’: James Bond movies keep going on and off Netflix, and it’s really hard to keep track of what’s on there. I try to make it a point to focus on the really good ones like ‘GoldenEye‘. You’ve got your Pierce Brosnan, of course, but Judy Dench, Sean Bean and Famke Janssen too. There’s also some Joe Don Baker, but that can be forgiven for an otherwise awesome movie. ‘The World Is Not Enough’ is new to the stream too, but that’s really not worth watching past the excellent opening theme.
