The Netflix Stream: Week of December 11th, 2011

Ack! Netflix loses more ‘MST3K’ this week, and that’s a hard thing to deal with. On the plus side, We’ve got plenty of crappy Christmas specials to fill out the season, and a pretty important documentary to boot.

Leaving the Stream
  1. ‘Mystery Science Theater 3000: Devil Doll’ (12-20): It makes me so sad that more ‘MST3K’ episodes are leaving Netflix. I mean, sure, I have them through other means (keep circulating the tapes!), but it was nice to watch them in a bit higher quality. ‘Devil Doll‘ stands out as the movie that managed to frighten me even while being made fun of by Mike and the bots. It’s just plain creepy.
  2. ‘Sling Blade’ (12-19): I need to get on this one. I’m familiar with the character and some of the quotes from ‘Sling Blade‘, but I’m sure there’s more to it than that. After all, the movie does star Dwight Yoakam, who kicked ass in ‘Wilfred’ and took ‘Crank 2: High Voltage’ just over the tipping point of awesome. I guess the guy from the ‘Bad News Bears’ remake is in it too, so that’s a thing.
Entering the Stream
  1. ‘Waiting for “Superman’: Let’s start with the heavy stuff. ‘Waiting for Superman‘ is a much-heralded documentary about our public school system that looks at what’s going wrong and what effect it will have on the country if we don’t do anything about it. The documentary is important viewing, but I wouldn’t recommend it for the family at Christmas.
  2. ‘He-Man & She-Ra: A Christmas Special’: I have a pair of friends – okay, more than a pair, but I’m thinking of two folks in particular – that like to sit at home and smoke non-tobacco on a regular basis. While they’re enjoying their altered state, they love watching ‘He-Man & She-Ra: A Christmas Special‘. Even when it’s nowhere near Christmas. I can’t recommend this for everyone, but if you’re into absolute garbage, this is the flick to watch.
