The Trailer Park: Looking to the Past for Inspiration

Stories from real life are often a great source for good movies. Sadly, that’s not always the case, but the following films look to be loaded with potential.

‘Legend’

Tom Hardy is always such a blast to watch on the screen. Even when his muffled voice leaves us wondering what he just said, the man is an incredibly talented actor. From the looks of the trailer, this explosive bio-pic based on the criminal activities of London’s infamous Kray twins will surely not disappoint. It’ll be amazing to watch Hardy act opposite himself. The film comes from Brian Helgeland, who’s better known for writing films such as ‘L.A. Confidential’, ‘Payback’, ‘Mystic River’ and ‘Man on Fire’ than for his directing talents. Nonetheless, my anticipation is high for this one.

‘Joy’

Of all the movies coming out this year, I kind of hope this comedy bio-drama won’t be too terrible. Is the story of Joy Mangano, the inventor of the “Miracle Mop” and President of Ingenious Designs, LLC really that interesting? Well, apparently David O. Russell seems to think so. With such surprising hits as ‘American Hustle’ and ‘Silver Linings Playbook’, the man is currently on a winning streak and knows to make such drama entertaining. Besides, the film features the talents of Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper and Robert De Niro, which should give us some hope. The trailer also looks pretty damn good.

‘Stonewall’

The Stonewall Riots of 1969 were considered by historians as the moment that LGBT rights were brought to mainstream American culture. This latest telling of the event (of which there are now five) will remind people, especially the younger generation, that there was once a time when demanding equality and living openly meant putting your life at serious risk. Probably most surprising is seeing Roland Emmerich in the director’s chair for this, only because he’s better known for grand, sweeping epics and big-budget disaster movies. However, after seeing what he did in ‘Anonymous’, I have confidence that he’ll do the story justice.

‘Everest’

Finally, here’s one last preview just for fun. From the looks of it, Baltasar Kormákur’s film, based on the true story of the 1996 Mount Everest disaster, is something moviegoers will want to watch on the biggest screen possible, and preferably in IMAX 3D!

Anyone interested in LEGEND should watch Peter Medak’s movie THE KRAYS, which is the same story.
Medak used the identical twins from the band Spandau Ballet(!) to play the brothers. Good flick.

    • While Gary Kemp and Martin Kemp are brothers who look a lot alike, they are not actually twins. Gary is two years older.

But yes, it’s a good movie. I’m not really sure it needed to be remade just for the gimmick of having Tom Hardy play two different characters.

I’ve heard that’s a good film and I’ll try to see it someday. Although I do like gangster movies, my interest in seeing ‘Legend’ comes less from the subject matter and more from Hardy’s performance.
