Hollywood’s obsession with adapting popular comic books is not slowing down in the slightest. In fact, it only seems to be growing and expanding to the point of bloating cinemas with superhero adventures, as is evident by these previews for the 2016 summer movie lineup.
‘Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice’
As a fan both superhero characters, this direct sequel to 2013’s ‘Man of Steel‘ ranks high on my list of most anticipated movies for 2016. This second trailer succeeds in amping up my excitement. As part of a Warner’s second phase in extending the DC cinematic universe, Zack Snyder and David S. Goyer return with a story that takes various bits and pieces from both franchises in the hopes of launching a Justice League feature.
Seeing Doomsday’s appearance at the end of the trailer and Wonder Woman jump into the fray suggest that the prehistoric Kryptonian creature is what leads other superheroes to unite. Sadly, we’re not given any glimpses of Aquaman, the Flash or Cyborg. To be honest, I’m starting to really hate Jesse Eisenberg as Lex Luthor. That’s the only thing causing some hesitation for me.
‘Captain America: Civil War’
If the trailer is any indication, hopefully this follow-up to the surprisingly satisfying ‘The Winter Soldier‘ will make up for the aftertaste of the lackluster ‘Age of Ultron‘. The tension between Cap and Iron Man has been building for some time now. They both seem at opposite ends in their philosophies of justice, with one’s “at all costs” attitude clashing with the other’s more rational approach. It’ll be interesting to see them duke it out while questioning each other’s personal loyalties in the pursuit of the greater good. The few, very minor sneak peeks at Black Panther add more fuel to the flame.
‘X-Men: Apocalypse’
I’m not really even sure where to start with this one, except perhaps to mention that the preview actually gave me some goosebumps. There’s so much going on in only two and half minutes that I’m genuinely surprised the filmmakers pulled it off without seeming to give away too much. The previous two ‘X-Men’ prequels were incredibly satisfying, which places a great deal of weight and anticipation on this one, but the trailer promises that fans will not be disappointed.
I love that popular, better-known mainstays like Storm, Cyclops, Nightcrawler and Jean Grey are finally being introduced to this reboot franchise while also introducing lesser known characters, particularly Psylocke, Archangel and Jubilee. I think the best addition of all is Oscar Isaac, who’s a fantastic actor, portraying the powerful immortal Apocalypse.
‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Out of the Shadows ‘
Prepare to have your eyes burn and brains melt at the thought that the last ‘Ninja Turtles‘ was enough of a success to warrant a sequel. Amazingly, it doesn’t look as awful as its predecessor.

‘X-Men 5’, maybe I’ll catch it on an airplane. The others I will skip.
‘Batman vs Superman’ I will skip because it looks awful. That new trailer just seems to drive home how absurdly underpowered Batman is when placed in Superman’s world, and therefore he is irrelevant in this conflict and just jammed in because he’s a popular character. Also, Jesse Eisenberg’s decision to portray Lex Luthor as Wes Anderson seems ill-advised.
‘Iron Man vs Catpain America’ looks okay, but I’ve skipped so many of these Marvel movies now that I probably don’t know what’s going on and getting back in would involve catching up on a bunch of movies I don’t want to watch. Also, it’s probably designed to set up more movies that I won’t watch.
‘Ninja Turtles 2’ I’ll skip because I’m too old for this sort of thing, but at least it looks like it’s trying to be what a Turtles movie is supposed to be, which is wisecracking camaraderie among the turtles while they fight overthetop monsters. The last one looked like it was focussing on Meg Fox solving some mystery about her father or something. I don’t know, I didn’t see it.
So as far as superhero movies go next year, ‘Deadpool’ and ‘Suicide Squad’ will get my money. Those ones look more my style.

I want to see all of these flicks. I’ve been waiting to see Bebop and Rocksteady in a live action Turtle movie since I was about 12, not to mention Baxter Stockman and maybe even Krang.. I’m really stoked for this. I’ve heard the budget for Dawn of Justice has reached astronomical numbers, so why does Doomsday look so poorly rendered? I know there’s time to fix it, but even his design seems a bit underwhelming. I’m probably most curious about seeing how this one’s going to play out. Of all the superhero flicks coming out next year, I’m rooting for Civil War the most. I feel Winter Soldier set a really high bar and hope this doesn’t become a diss appointment.

Batman V. Superman reaks of desperation. I’ve felt that way since it was initially announced. To me it says they didn’t trust another Superman film to stand on its considering how polarizing Man of Steel was (I was in the “hated it” group). DC doesn’t trust Superman to pull in a big audience so they pull in the one character who has consistently made money, Batman. And just in case even that doesn’t work because of goodwill lost due to The Dark Knight Rises (which I did like despite the plot holes), let’s shoehorn in Wonder Woman because fans have been wanting a big screen version of her for ages. I’m guessing that Wonder Woman is really just a cameo and fans that went to see her are going to walk out miffed that she only got 30 seconds of screen time.
To my surprise, I actually enjoyed the TMNT movie so I’m kind of looking forward to the second one. I doubt I’ll see it in a theatre but who knows.
I might get around to seeing the Marvel movies in theatres but probably not. I mean I did manage to see Avengers 2 in a theatre (and am part of the minority that enjoyed it more than the extremely big and extremely dumb first movie). But if I have to watch the Avengers stupidly fight each one more time before they’ll bother to do anything constructive I might scream.

I am superhero-ed out. Once this stuff comes at this clip it ceases being special, or even event level cinema. Same will happen with Star Wars. Once a year, and you basically become a BBC series like Sherlock bowing once every year or two.
Nothing is special anymore, because it is all commonplace…and more-of-the-same in repetition.

They all look good to me. I’m a little disappointed that they seemed to give away too much with the BvS trailer.
