Leaving the Stream: Week of August 22nd

It’s a sad fact of life that movies just don’t stay on Netflix Instant Watch forever. Most of the movies that get shuffled off of the list aren’t breaking any hearts by doing so, but there’s some genuinely good stuff too.

Fargo (8/29)

The Coen brothers made plenty of fine films before 1996. ‘Raising Arizona’ and ‘Barton Fink’ come to mind immediately. But it wasn’t until ‘Fargo‘ that they finally made it to my radar. Maybe that’s because ‘Fargo’ was the first film to win them an Oscar (for screenwriting). Or maybe it’s because, as a sophomore in high school, I was finally able to understand what makes dark comedy so good. ‘Fargo’ is a classic, and you’ve only got a few days left to catch it streaming. If you want to go with the optical media version, be sure you check out our Blu-ray review.

Rocky IV (8/30)

So here’s the deal with the fourth ‘Rocky’ movie, in case you somehow never got around to seeing it. America. You’ve probably heard of it. It’s totally better than Russia. Also, good ol’ American determination is better than science. It’s a confusing message. ‘Rocky IV‘ stars Sly Stallone as you might expect, as well as Dolph Lungren and Carl “Baby, you got a stew goin’!” Weathers.

Buck Rogers in the 25th Century: The Complete Epic Series (8/30)

This one is particularly cool for two reasons: First off, it’s ‘Buck Rogers.’ It’s not the original 1928 movie serial, but a reboot that hit TV in 1979 after the success of ‘Star Wars,’ which was itself inspired by the original ‘Buck Rogers.’ If you’re into sort-of campy sci-fi, then you’re in luck here. The other reason it’s such an interesting streaming title is that the series is currently unavailable on DVD through Netflix. You’ve got until next Monday to get through all 33 episodes.

  1. Dang it, I am only in the second episode of Buck Rogers! I got to finish it off! That being said, it could be extended – many of the shows I watch were supposed to expire 8/2, and about the day before, BattleStar Galactica and Legend of the Seeker got extended

    • I haven’t started it yet, but I think I’m gonna get some friends together and give it a go on Saturday.

Now that I’m all caught up on Dr. Who, I need some new sci-fi to watch 🙂
