HBO Cancels Two Great Comedies

HBO Cancels Two Great Comedies

In a very surprising development (to me, anyway), HBO announced this week that two of my favorite comedies on the network, ‘Hung’ and ‘Bored to Death’, have been officially canceled. ‘How to Make It in America’ also got the axe, but I can’t imagine that comes as a shock to anyone.

‘Luck’ Pilot Recap: “Holy Cow, That Horse Run Very Good!”

‘Luck’ Pilot Recap: “Holy Cow, That Horse Run Very Good!”

HBO has a pretty simple formula for developing its original programming. When creating a new drama series, throw a whole lot of money at it and attract big name talent. The strategy works more often than not. This past Sunday, the network had a special preview event for the pilot episode of ‘Luck’, which will officially premiere at the end of January. The show, which is centered around the world of professional horse racing, is produced by David Milch (‘NYPD Blue’, ‘Deadwood’) and Michael Mann. The cast features a line-up of heavy-hitters including Dustin Hoffman, Nick Nolte, Dennis Farina and Michael Gambon. Did those names get your attention? They sure got mine.

‘Enlightened’ Pilot Recap: “You Look Like a Hippie”

‘Enlightened’ Pilot Recap: “You Look Like a Hippie”

Any new HBO series is always cause to take notice. Not every show the network airs winds up working out, but they’re usually interesting on some level. This week, the network premiered its new half-hour… I guess “dramedy” would be the word for it… series ‘Enlightened’, starring Laura Dern as a woman going through a mid-life crisis and trying really hard to come out the other side.

‘Dexter’ 6.02 Recap: “Sounds Like Divine Intervention”

‘Dexter’ 6.02 Recap: “Sounds Like Divine Intervention”

Season Six of ‘Dexter’ seems like it’s still setting the stage for the rest of the year. Not much has happened. We’ve essentially been reintroduced to the characters and met a few new ones. The question now is when the show will find its stride. Continue Reading

‘Dexter’ 6.01 Recap: “This Is No Amateur”

‘Dexter’ 6.01 Recap: “This Is No Amateur”

Showtime’s most popular series returned this past Sunday. As ‘Dexter’ enters its sixth season, the character finds himself searching for meaning in life, and maybe a belief in God. Meanwhile, we find that serial killer life is still flourishing in the Sunshine State.

‘Hung’ 3.01 Recap: “Welcome to Orgasmic Living!”

‘Hung’ 3.01 Recap: “Welcome to Orgasmic Living!”

HBO’s ‘Hung’ returned for its third season this Sunday. Ostensibly a comedy, the series often leans more toward drama. It’s about down-and-out characters scraping to get by, after all. The new season premiere, however, is all about the funny. In a welcome change of pace, the episode also finds our characters on an unexpected upswing.

‘Curb’ 8.10 Recap: “I’ll Be Back in Two Shakes”

‘Curb’ 8.10 Recap: “I’ll Be Back in Two Shakes”

I realize that I’m quite delinquent with this. My trip to the Toronto Film Festival and then my attempts to keep up with all the new fall TV premieres sidetracked me for a bit. Nonetheless, I covered most of this past season of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ (minus a couple of episodes), and I feel that I need to close that out with a recap of the finale.

‘True Blood’ 4.12 Recap: “We’re All Alone at the End”

‘True Blood’ 4.12 Recap: “We’re All Alone at the End”

By now, I’ve learned to take it as a given that ‘True Blood’ simply has awful season premiere and finale episodes. I’ve been let down with the finales for three straight years, and went into Season 4′s last episode with rock bottom low expectations – especially considering that this was easily the series’ worst season so far. Perhaps that’s why I came out of last week’s ‘And When I Die’ a little pleasantly surprised. The episode is still a schizophrenic mess, of course, but it’s not nearly as terrible as I expected. That’s got to count as progress.
