‘Golden Boy’ Pilot Recap: “I Pay Attention”

‘Golden Boy’ Pilot Recap: “I Pay Attention”

Wait’ll you hear the pitch for CBS’ new detective series ‘Golden Boy’. See, we’ve got these two cops, but they’re totally mismatched buddies. One is black, but the other’s white, kind of like salt and pepper. One is young and brash, and the other’s old and grizzled. Crazy, right? Why has nobody done this before?

‘Elementary’ Pilot Recap: “Sometimes I Hate It When I’m Right”

‘Elementary’ Pilot Recap: “Sometimes I Hate It When I’m Right”

The new CBS mystery procedural series ‘Elementary’ has the ingenious concept of updating Sherlock Holmes to the modern day. What a novel idea! Why has no one else thought of this before? Oh, wait…

‘Vegas’ Pilot Recap: “You Don’t Look Like the Law”

‘Vegas’ Pilot Recap: “You Don’t Look Like the Law”

Last year, NBC and ABC launched ambitious primetime dramas set in the swinging 1960s (‘The Playboy Club’ and ‘Pan Am’ respectively). Both proved to be ratings duds and were canceled in the first season. (In fact, ‘The Playboy Club’ was such a flop that NBC yanked it from the schedule after just three episodes.) For some reason, CBS lagged behind this trend a year, and has only this week premiered its own ’60s-era series, ‘Vegas’. Can a big-name cast keep this one on the air longer?

‘Person of Interest’ 1.03 Recap: “Can’t Cure Someone of Guilt”

‘Person of Interest’ 1.03 Recap: “Can’t Cure Someone of Guilt”

I think that I’m just about done with ‘Person of Interest’. Although I still feel that the show has the foundation in place to build a potentially interesting storyline, it has thus far failed to take advantage of that. Based on last week’s episode, the series actually seems disinterested in ever doing so.

Sitcom Scorecard, Part 2: ‘Suburgatory’ and ‘Gentleman’

Sitcom Scorecard, Part 2: ‘Suburgatory’ and ‘Gentleman’

Well, the world just doesn’t make sense. Since the last Sitcom Scorecard post, NBC has ordered up a whole slate of ‘Whitney’ and CBS has extended the run of ’2 Broke Girls’. In other words, Whitney Cummings has taken the TV world by storm this year. Whoever is watching these shows, please stop. Please.

‘Person of Interest’ 1.02 Recap: “I Thought Your Wife Liked Roses”

‘Person of Interest’ 1.02 Recap: “I Thought Your Wife Liked Roses”

‘The Equalizer’ meets ‘Minority Report’. That’s the comparison I was trying to make in last week’s recap of ‘Person of Interest’, but I couldn’t think of the second half. Of course, the show’s magic computer that predicts criminal behavior is reminiscent of the Pre-Crime system in ‘Minority Report’. I’m annoyed that I didn’t make that connection earlier. Anyway, I honestly don’t know how I feel about ‘Person of Interest’ yet. Last week’s second episode wasn’t much of an improvement over the underwhelming series premiere. I want to think that this show has the potential to turn into something interesting, but it’s really not there yet.

Fall 2011 Sitcom Scorecard: ‘New Girl’ Atop New Comedies

Fall 2011 Sitcom Scorecard: ‘New Girl’ Atop New Comedies

You know it’s officially fall when there are more new sitcoms on TV than familiar ones. Don’t ask me why, but as of right now, I’ve seen every new comedy pilot that has aired. Read on to see how I rate each of them.

‘Person of Interest’ Pilot Recap: “I Know Exactly Everything About You”

‘Person of Interest’ Pilot Recap: “I Know Exactly Everything About You”

Wait a second… CBS actually has a new show this season that I was excited to see? That’s unusual in itself. The series is a mystery thriller with a sci-fi bent that was created by Jonathan Nolan (brother of Christopher, and writer of ‘The Prestige‘ and ‘The Dark Knight‘) and stars Michael Emerson from ‘Lost’? Uh, yeah, you’ve caught my attention now. This thing is loaded with potential. So why doesn’t the first episode seem to live up to any of it?

‘Source Code’ to Receive the Television Treatment

‘Source Code’ to Receive the Television Treatment

The Hollywood Reporter broke the news last week that Duncan Jones’ sci-fi thriller ‘Source Code‘ is headed to CBS in the form of a new TV series. Because little is known at this point, it’s unclear whether the show will feature the same characters from the film or entirely new ones. The series will follow three top secret federal agents using the “Source Code” technology the jump back in time to tragic events. Continue Reading

A Mormon Just Believes!

A Mormon Just Believes!

I don’t know how many (if any) of our readers here care about the Tony Awards. The Tonys (and Broadway in general) are not something that I generally give much thought. However, I felt it worth reporting that ‘South Park’ creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker pretty much swept the awards ceremony that aired Sunday on CBS with their satirical religious musical ‘Book of Mormon’. This almost makes up for that Oscar debacle from a few years back. I guess it’s a good thing that Phil Collins didn’t have a show on Broadway this year.
