I shouldn’t be disappointed. When ‘Alphas’ premiered, the show clearly set itself up to take on a case-of-the-week procedural structure. It’s ‘The X-Files’ for superhumans. Nonetheless, the last couple of really fantastic, mythology-building episodes set a high bar that I’m afraid this week’s episode, as perfectly decent as it may be, has a lot of trouble living up to.

The “Standards and Practices” rules for cable – even basic cable – channels are a lot more lenient than the major broadcast networks. After 10 PM, just about anything except nudity and the f-word are fair game. (For those, you need to go to the premium channels.) FX has frequently pushed the boundaries of what it can get away with in shows like ‘It’s Always Sunny’ and ‘Archer’, but last week’s episode of ‘Wilfred’ really does everything it possibly can to cross the line without getting sued by the FCC. Is there even a line anymore? Should there be?

After last week’s shockingly intense episode, I have to admit that I expected ‘Alphas’ to ease off this week and give us something lighter, perhaps a routine case-of-the-week with fairly low stakes for the characters. In other words, filler. It’s not unreasonable for a modestly-budgeted genre show on a network like Syfy to pull back and save up its energy for the handful of important episodes sprinkled throughout the season. But that’s not at all what happened. Instead, we have another slam-bang suspense piece – one that also kicks the show’s mythology story arc into high gear. For a cable series only four episodes in, ‘Alphas’ is off to an incredible start.
