This may be the end. ABC has aired the final two episodes of ‘Happy Endings’ Season 3. These may be the final two episodes of the series forever, unless ABC offers a last minute renewal, or USA or TBS snaps the show up. If these are to be the end, at least they’re not a bad way to go out – with some slapstick and a whole lot of whimsy.

It seems like ‘Happy Endings’ has had a hard time figuring out what it wants to do this season. First, the show thrust Alex and Dave back together, which has had surprisingly little repercussions, given their history. Then Brad went through an employment crisis, only to come out the other end firmly maintaining the status quo. Now it’s Penny’s turn.

Oh, hi there. Remember these guys? It’s the gang over at ‘Happy Endings’, returning after months of radio (and more importantly, television) silence. I don’t know who’s in charge of scheduling at ABC, but they should be fired. Keeping a show as smart and funny as ‘Happy Endings’ off the air while running endless, dreary episodes of crap like ‘The Middle’ should be considered a crime. Sadly, it looks more and more likely that the show itself will be fired, as ABC’s currently running a “Save Happy Endings” campaign, which places the onus of the show’s low ratings on the audience and not the network itself. How do you expect any series to do well if you fail to market it, and then change its air day every two weeks?

Following the wake of an immediate cancelation for ‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apt. 23″ (which disappoints me as I enjoyed the show, although it wasn’t perfect), ‘Happy Endings’ is being presented in double shots on Tuesday nights. These two episodes make a good pairing, since one leads in directly from the other. The first involves a prank played on Max, while the second takes place at a wedding expo.

ABC’s Sunday night comedy experiment was a dismal failure. Both ‘Happy Endings’ and ‘Don’t Trust the B— in Apartment 23′ sank to the lowest ratings either show has ever had. It didn’t help that Sunday’s episode of ‘Happy Endings’, officially designated as Episode 10 of Season 3, was in fact an unaired episode from Season 2 (‘Kickball 2: The Kickening’, for the curious). The episode, which predated events like Dave and Alex getting back together, confused viewers. Get it together, ABC. You paid for the show. Just air the whole season in order. Is that so hard? Anyway, we’re firmly back in Season 3 territory now, and ABC has already replaced the Sunday airings with repeats of ‘Shark Tank’.

As much as I love ‘Happy Endings’ – and believe me, it’s a lot – sometimes the show comes up a little short. Last Tuesday’s episode was mainly a dud, with two out of the three storylines failing to deliver the goods. However, the one that does is an absolute winner.
