Mid-Week Poll: Where Do You Buy Blu-rays?

Mid-Week Poll: Where Do You Buy Blu-rays?

Once-mighty retailer Best Buy announced last week that it took a $1.7 billion loss in the last quarter and will be closing 50 of its stores. Following the dissolution of other major chains such as Circuit City and Borders, this is just the latest example of traditional brick-and-mortar retail giving way to the growing power of internet commerce. Specifically when it comes to buying movies on Blu-ray, do you prefer to shop online or in physical stores?

Videogame Releases: Week of April 1st, 2012

Videogame Releases: Week of April 1st, 2012

It looks like April is going to be a slow month for new videogames. Sorry, folks. Here’s hoping some sweet ‘Rock Band’ DLC or groovy iOS/Android games unexpectedly come down the pike as the studios developing for consoles and PC seem to be working on bigger releases. Otherwise, you’ll have to buckle down for what is sure to be the most exciting videogame release week of the month, which is obviously not saying much

Full Metal Jackets: Enter the Talented Lt. Ripley

“Lullaby, and good night… you’re your mother’s delight. Shining angels beside… my darling abide. Soft and warm is your bed… close your eyes and rest your head. Save some face… if you can – ’cause that’s no Sandman.” Just a few days before Ridley Scott’s sci-fi epic ‘Prometheus’ hits theaters on June 8th, British retailer Play.com is set to release a new Blu-ray edition of the ‘Alien Anthology‘ in SteelBook packaging.

Blu-ray Highlights for 4/3/12 – Forget It, Jake

Blu-ray Highlights for 4/3/12 – Forget It, Jake

I don’t know about you, but this week’s Blu-ray selection looks pretty bleak from my perspective. There’s only one title that I want to add to my movie collection. Fortunately, it’s a really good one and an essential purchase. Beyond that, not much catches my eye.

Videogame Releases: Week of March 25th, 2012

Videogame Releases: Week of March 25th, 2012

It’s a rather unremarkable week for new videogame releases, unless you’re one of the very specific 3DS owners who feels affection for the similarly unremarkable Nintendo Entertainment System game ‘Kid Icarus’. I guess it’s cool if you like golf too, but let’s be honest, golf games peaked with ‘Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf’ for the Genesis.

Blu-ray Highlights for 3/27/12 – The Beginning of a Beautiful Friendship

Just how many “Ultimate Collector’s Editions” of one movie do we need? We’ll find out this week, as Warner Bros. re-releases one of its most important classics in another fancy Blu-ray box set. Also on tap are some great titles from the Criterion Collection and a handful of recent Oscar hopefuls.

VUDU Diaries: ‘Horror of Dracula’

VUDU Diaries: ‘Horror of Dracula’

A couple months ago, our special contributor Adam wrote up a review of ‘The Hammer Vault’, a book that details the history of the legendary British movie studio, Hammer Films. Reading that review forced me to admit that I’d never actually seen a film from the studio – well, none of its classics, anyway. (I’d only seen the very recent ‘Let Me In‘.) I decided to rectify that oversight, only to realize that few of the studio’s movies are currently available on Blu-ray. VUDU, however, came to the rescue with one of Hammer’s signature titles, ‘Horror of Dracula’, directed by Terence Fisher and starring the duo of Christopher Lee and Peter Cushing.

The Netflix Stream: Week of March 18th, 2012

The Netflix Stream: Week of March 18th, 2012

The stream information from Netflix still seems to be janked up, so we might have to change the day that this regular post goes up, but there are still a few relatively new additions that absolutely need to be pointed out.

Why Walmart’s Disc-to-Digital Program Isn’t Such a Bad Idea

Why Walmart’s Disc-to-Digital Program Isn’t Such a Bad Idea

Recent news of the Walmart-exclusive Disc-to-Digital program, which allows customers to bring a DVD or Blu-ray into a Walmart store in order to receive an internet streaming version of the same movie for a small fee, was met with a lot of scoffing in some home theater circles. Why would someone want to pay again for a movie they already own, right? Especially since internet streaming still can’t match the quality of a good Blu-ray disc. Is there any point to this, other than to clear out some physical disc clutter? Well, it turns out that most of this skepticism is based on misconceptions of what the program really is. I can think of at least one scenario where this could be a really appealing option.

Mid-Week Poll: Movie Watching and Social Networking

Mid-Week Poll: Movie Watching and Social Networking

Today’s poll was inspired by the Prescreen contest we ran last week. Prescreen links a user’s movie-streaming account to his or her Facebook account, in order to make their movie watching habits more of a social networking experience, much as Spotify does for music. I’ve noticed that Netflix and VUDU also have similar features. Do you use them? Do you update Facebook or Twitter when you watch a movie?
