Weekend Movies: The Calm Before the Summer Storm

Weekend Movies: The Calm Before the Summer Storm

What a wasted opportunity. Today is 4/20 and not a single studio thought to release a stoner comedy. I’m more shocked about that than I am about the weak movies that actually open today.

Weekend Box Office: Four in a Row!

Weekend Box Office: Four in a Row!

Once again, ‘The Hunger Games’ walked away with the weekend box office crown. The film has finished in first place for four consecutive weekends. The last movie to perform this well was 2010′s ‘Avatar‘. Down only 35% from last weekend, ‘The Hunger Games’ made another $21.5 million, which brings its domestic gross to $337 million. Analysts predict that it just might finish its theatrical run around the $400 million mark.

Now Playing: Another Farrelly Brothers Dud

Now Playing: Another Farrelly Brothers Dud

From the very first trailer, I didn’t expect ‘The Three Stooges’ to be any good, but I had some hope that it might be anyway. I grew up watching marathons of the classics with my old man on just about every major holiday, so I wanted the ‘Stooges’ movie to be good. From the trailers, the actors playing Larry, Moe and Curly seemed a lot better than I thought they’d be upon first hearing the casting. Unfortunately, little did I know that the story they’d be written into would ruin everything that made the original Stooges films worth watching. Continue Reading

Now Playing: The Best Horror Film in Years

Now Playing: The Best Horror Film in Years

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ is a difficult movie to review. It’s almost impossible to talk about it without spoiling something import. Instead of describing the plot, I’m going to emphasize how much you should just take the leap of faith and get out there to see it.

Weekend Movies: The Three Genre Flicks

Weekend Movies: The Three Genre Flicks

Despite three new movies hitting the big screen this weekend, I don’t know if any of them can dethrone ‘The Hunger Games’. I guess we’ll see.

Weekend Box Office: ‘Hunger Games’ Passes $300 Million in 17 Days

Weekend Box Office: ‘Hunger Games’ Passes $300 Million in 17 Days

No surprise, folks, ‘The Hunger Games’ is still killing it. In fact, that was the only movie in the Top 3 this weekend to actually defy box office expectations. While predicted to close the weekend in second place with a 51% decline at $28.9 million, ‘The Hunger Games’ fell only 42.8% and drew another $33.5 million. That pushes it over the $300 million mark in its third weekend. Here’s hoping that Lionsgate hires a director for the second film who can match the quality of the first.

Now Playing: Spurlock’s Geek-tastic Comic-Con Doc

Now Playing: Spurlock’s Geek-tastic Comic-Con Doc

Is there any other filmmaker with the ability to make documentaries as fun as those by Morgan Spurlock? I don’t believe so. His latest film is not only solid entertainment, as usual, but also reveals a side of Spurlock that I, for one, had no idea existed until now – his hardcore inner geek.

Now Playing: A ‘Reunion’ Worthy of a Direct-To-Blu Release

Now Playing: A ‘Reunion’ Worthy of a Direct-To-Blu Release

I know that plenty of people out there believe that the ‘American Pie’ movies are some of the funniest R-rated comedies around, but I’m not one of them. The first movie was funny enough, but not three – and especially not four – times. Since ‘American Wedding’, the franchise has become a ‘National Lampoon’ of sorts, releasing a bunch of really bad direct-to-video titles filled with unheard-of actors and characters. Sadly, ‘American Reunion’ belongs with those.

Weekend Movies: Can the ‘Titanic’ Sink ‘The Hunger Games’?

Weekend Movies: Can the ‘Titanic’ Sink ‘The Hunger Games’?

Once again, we have another underwhelming weekend. My guess is that studios still don’t want to go head-to-head with ‘The Hunger Games’. Can we hurry up and get into May already? I’m antsy for ‘The Avengers’.

Weekend Box Office: Audiences ‘Hunger’ for More

Weekend Box Office: Audiences ‘Hunger’ for More

Was there any doubt that ‘The Hunger Games’ would follow up its $155 million opening weekend in any spot other than first again? Of course not, but the drop-off was not as friendly as the studio hoped it would be. Lionsgate predicted a 53% drop that would have given the film a $71.7 million second weekend. Actually, it fell 59.9% to only bring in another $61.1 million. After just ten days on the big screen, this $78-million movie has already brought in $251 million. Strong work, Lionsgate!
