Weekend Roundtable: Worst Movie Titles

Weekend Roundtable: Worst Movie Titles

We have a really simple but fun Roundtable topic this week. Let’s call out our picks for some of the worst movie titles of all time. Regardless of whether the movies themselves are any good or not (though many of our choices stink), these films are burdened with lousy titles that turn us off from wanting to watch them.

Now Playing: The Shaky Marriage of Cliché and Creativity

Now Playing: The Shaky Marriage of Cliché and Creativity

I don’t have a problem with romance flicks in general, except when they feel like mash-ups of every other romantic drama out there. The concept of ‘The Vow’ has a lot of potential, but it’s bogged down by an unhealthy amount of recycled content.

Now Playing: Familiar ‘Safe House’ Excels with Great Action and Strong Leads

Now Playing: Familiar ‘Safe House’ Excels with Great Action and Strong Leads

If ‘Journey 2′ is the recommended mindless family flick this week, ‘Safe House’ is the recommended mindless adult flick of the week. Filled with intense, almost non-stop action, it will at least keep you entertained.

Now Playing: Second ‘Journey’ Better Than First, But That’s Not Saying Much

Now Playing: Second ‘Journey’ Better Than First, But That’s Not Saying Much

There are literally three things I remember about ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth‘: First, two members of the cast stuck out in my mind because I remember thinking, “Poor Brendan Frasier has fallen a long way” and “This Josh Hutcherson kid sure is a terrible little actor.” Secondly, I remember watching those two running away from a T-Rex. And third, I remember that it was one of the first films to use the new digital 3D technology, but it was used for a lot of cheap effects that tried to make items pop out of the screen. ‘Journey 2′ doesn’t feature Brendan Frasier, and Josh Hutcherson has improved quite a bit, but the movie still misuses 3D and only has a handful of scenes that you’ll remember.

Weekend Movies: A Variety of Mindless Flicks

Weekend Movies: A Variety of Mindless Flicks

All of the movies taking the big screen this weekend are on the border of mediocrity. None of them is fatally terrible nor particularly great, but every audience has something to mild to see.

Sundance Journal: ‘The Words’

Sundance Journal: ‘The Words’

‘The Words’ is on track to becoming a highly-popular film that will be loved and appreciated by both the indie and mainstream crowds. The story is great, the filmmaking is solid and the performances are top notch. With a little editing and perhaps a short reshoot to extend one scene, I could see ‘The Words’ being next year’s Oscar bait.

Sundance Journal: ‘Goats’

Sundance Journal: ‘Goats’

While the film isn’t terrible, the one thing that I walked away with after seeing ‘Goats’ was the desire to never watch another coming-of-age tale again. The things that work in the film are the characters. What doesn’t work is the generic, by-the-book, seen-it-one-hundred-times-before story.

Sundance Journal: ‘For A Good Time, Call…’

Sundance Journal: ‘For A Good Time, Call…’

Now that I’m caught up on some Blu-ray reviews, it’s time crank out the rest of my Sundance coverage. Continuing the trend of R-rated, female-driven comedies at this year’s festival was ‘For a Good Time, Call…’ starring Lauren Anne Miller (‘Superbad‘) and Ari Gaynor (‘Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist‘).

The Trailer Park: The Horror of Horrible Movies

The Trailer Park: The Horror of Horrible Movies

Pretty much every decade has had its share of bad movies. Only two years into this second decade of the 21st Century, and we’re already seeing one terrible film after another. The trailers for the following two horror flicks look like no exception, but one of them at least has me interested by its unique approach (certainly not for any originality in the story or plot).

Statuesque: Will the SAG Awards Predict the Oscars?

Statuesque: Will the SAG Awards Predict the Oscars?

Awards season always fills me with such anxiety. I worry that the films I deem worthy to win will lose to films that I completely dislike. Like other critics, I know that I’m right and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong. (Yes, I’m being sarcastic). I’m so opinionated over this matter that I get really riled up about it. What has my blood boiling right now are the results of the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards, which were announced on Sunday.
