You know it’s a slow week when one of the most exciting new Blu-ray releases is a pretty crappy, 30-year-old B horror flick. Personally, I have so much else going on right now that I welcome the break.
The first weekend of January only gave us two new nationwide releases, four noteworthy expansions, and not a single limited opening. Of the two wide releases, only one has had its numbers announced (so far), so this will be a short post.
It’s over. Every good movie that the studios were trying to shovel out in time for Academy Awards consideration has been released. Now we get the leftovers. It’s a good thing that nobody takes the first weekend of a new year’s releases as a sign of the 51 that will follow it. Forgive me for the pessimism and negativity that lies ahead, but this is a weekend that would best serve for catching-up on your unwatched Blu-ray pile or awards contenders that you still need to see.
The first installment of the ‘Hobbit’ series held onto the top box office spot over the Christmas holiday. However, by falling 56.3% in attendance, the film has failed to maintain the ‘Lord of the Rings’ legacy. Even though the movie has grossed $150 million during its domestic 10-day run, its quick decline suggests that ‘An Unexpected Journey’ will be the least of all the Tolkien-based films so far. Nonetheless, its $36.9 million second weekend was more than twice enough to secure first place over the five holiday wide releases.
With only two weekends left before the end of the year and, more importantly, the end of awards eligibility, a tidal wave of great movies are opening this week. Ready to run through this weekend’s huge list?
Christmas is right around the corner, and the Hollywood studios have some last-minute Blu-ray releases to tempt holiday shoppers. While none of these are likely to exhibit the selling power of last week’s ‘Dark Knight Rises’, perhaps you’ll find something to put on your list for Santa.
The latest James Bond and ‘Twilight’ flicks that have dominated the box office in recent weeks were finally uprooted by a newcomer. After last week’s slump, the box office has bounced back with a new record.
The first installment in Peter Jackson’s ‘Lord of the Rings’ prequel trilogy, ‘The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey’, opened over the weekend. Did you see it? Did it live up to your expectations? What did you think of the 48 fps photography? Vote in our polls today.
